Funeral Services for Erma Matilda Laura Westphal Stief, 79, of Alta, were held Monday, June 24, 2002, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alta with Pastor Kevin Huss officiating. Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Aurelia. The Barker Funeral Home in Alta was in charge of the arrangements.
Erma Matilda Laura Westphal Stief, twin daughter of Henry and Clara (Juergens) Westphal, was born on May 31, 1923, in Elk Township, Buena Vista County. Her twin sister is Mrs. Ted (Evelyn) Braunschwieg. Erma was baptized on July 1, 1923, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Afton Township, Cherokee County, by Pastor H.W. Baumann. There she was also instructed in her faith and confirmed on April 17, 1938, by Pastor Braunschweig. She lived with her parents and family on a farm in Buena Vista County.
On October 1, 1944, Erma was united in marriage to Willard Stief at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Afton Township by Pastor Braunschweig. The couple lived on a farm in Afton Township. They were blessed with four children. Erma and Willard moved to Alta on January 10, 1976.
Erma was a Sunday School Teacher at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She became a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alta on June 22, 1973, and had served on the Altar Guild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willard, on September 22, 1981; one son, Dean at the age of 14; one brother, Ervin Westphal; and one sister, Melvina Honsbruch.
Erma is survived by three daughters, Marlene Jenness of Cherokee, Nancy and Jack Galvin of Aurelia, and Sharon Stief of Alta; six grandchildren, Chad and Kristen Jenness, Cory and Laurie Jenness, Chris and Missy Jenness, Jeremy and Jenn Galvin, Neil and Maranda Galvin and Joshua Galvin and his special friend Amy Mauer; three great grandchildren, Colvin Jenness, Isabel Jenness, and Sammy Galvin; two brothers, Arlen and Donna Westphal of Glendale, Az., and John and Char Westphal of Humboldt; one twin sister, Evelyn Braunschweig of Alta; and one sister-in-law, Rosemary Westphal of Aurelia.
