John Tutin Fertig was born December 27, 1929, in Hills, MN, the son of Francis H. J. Fertig and Rosa G. (Sayre) Fertig. His early years were spent primarily near Highmore, SD. In 1943, the family moved to Storm Lake. John graduated from the Storm Lake High School in 1947. He graduated from Buena Vista College on August 17, 1957, with a Bachelor of Science degree. John assisted in the Physics Department at the college and was brilliant in math and trigonometry.
While attending Buena Vista College, John worked for Charles Sessions. He, at one time, also served as a Commander in the National Guard.
John was a lifelong bachelor and carpenter. In addition to working for Bargloff's, he built many houses privately in Storm Lake and the surrounding area. He was sought after for his fine cabinet making and finishing skills. In addition, John was an Associate Instructor in the Secondary Career Building Trades Program at Iowa Central Community College from August 24, 1978, to June 4, 1985.
John was an outdoorsman. In 1969 he went to Mexico and appeared in a film advertising hunting and fishing. He enjoyed hunting trips to Wyoming and canoe and fishing trips to Canada with the Boy Scouts. He also enjoyed building rifles, including the barrels and woodstock from scratch.
Preceding John in death were his parents, and one nephew, Robert Fertig.
Survivors include three sisters, Lois Hendrickson of Sioux City, Mariellen Cisneros of San Bernardino, CA, and Ada and her husband Marlin Koth of Gilroy, CA; and one brother, George and his wife Rita Fertig of Kimberling City, MO; and several nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services for John Fertig, 72, of Storm Lake, was held 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at the Sliefert Redig Funeral Home in Storm Lake with Pastor Todd Schlitter of the United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery.
