Phyllis A. Lunsford, age 88, of New London, Conn., and formerly of Newell, died Friday, May 28, 2010, at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Waterford, Conn.

Phyllis Arlene Mehl was born on Jan. 6, 1922, in Pocahontas County, to John and Esther (Melohn) Mehl. She grew up on a farm near Fonda where she attended country school.

In February 1940, Phyllis was united in marriage to Floyd Lunsford. This couple was blessed with two daughters: Karen and Roberta.

Phyllis was a member of the Missouri Synod Lutheran Faith. She continued her devotion to her Lord and Savior by supporting local and world-wide missions and Feed The Children programs.

She was a homemaker her entire life, creating a warm and safe place for her family to live and grow. She was a devoted daughter, who cared for her father and mother most of her life. Family was a very important part of Phyllis' life and she took a special interest in their lives. In her spare time, Phyllis enjoyed creating crafts and oil paintings.

Those who will cherish Phyllis' memory are her daughter, Karen Johnson and her husband, Tony, of North Stonington, Conn.; grandchildren: Troy, Kevin and Travis Johnson, David and Wade Peyrucain; ten great grandchildren; one brother, Lucian Mehl; nieces and nephews; extended family and many friends.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Floyd; and her daughter, Roberta Peyrucain.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 3, 2010, at Faith Lutheran Church in Fonda. Burial was in the Cedar Cemetery in Fonda. The Mahaney Funeral Home in Fonda was in charge of the arrangements.
