Holman L. "Jack" Mathews, 95, of LeMars, and formerly of Cherokee, died Friday, March 15, 2002, in the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital, Cherokee, following a brief illness.
Jack was born April 14, 1906, near Storm Lake to William and Berth (Moller) Mathews.
As a young man he worked in the Storm Lake Area as an ice delivery man and also for the City of Storm Lake. He later worked for the Scothorn construction company in building the Alcan Highway. He served for several years on both the Cherokee Fire Department and The Storm Lake Fire Department.
In 1928 he married Barbara Wildermuth. Three children were born to this marriage: Arnold, George, and Laura. Barbara preceded Jack in death in 1945. On October 25, 1945, he married Clara Knudtson. Clara preceded him in death in 1998.
Jack moved to Cherokee in 1948 and managed the Gran Apartments for 21 years. Jack had also worked for Christens Brothers Construction and Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital. He retired to Okoboji where he enjoyed fishing and the Lakes region. In 1998 he moved to LeMars to live with his daughter, Jacque.
Survivors include two sons, Arnold Mathews and his wife, Marilyn, of Aberdeen, South Dakota, and Ken Mathews and his wife, Kathy, of Petaluma, CA,; one daughter, Jacqueline Olson, and her husband, Roger, of LeMars; one stepson, Bruce Gleason, and his wife, Gladys, of Santa Maria, CA.; 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Barbara (1945); wife Clara (1998); one son George (1978); one daughter Laura Mathews (1937); one daughter-in-law, Shirley; one granddaughter, Malinda Aldinger (1995); two great grandchildren, Heather and Christopher Olson (1989); four brothers, Wilbur, Dale, LeRoy and Roscoe Mathews.
Funeral Services were held Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, with the Reverend James Steen officiating. Burial was in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery, Storm Lake.
