Gladys D. Johnson, age 85, of Storm Lake, died Friday, March 15, 2002, at the Methodist Manor Care Center in Storm Lake after a lengthy illness.
Gladys Dorothea Victoria Johnson was born August 15, 1916, to Edwin and Norma Johnson at her parents' home north of Alta in Buena Vista County. She was baptized April 24, 1916, at Immanuel Lutheran Church north of Alta. Subsequently, she attended Sunday school there and was confirmed there on April 27, 1930, by Reverend Palmer Nestander.
Gladys attended country school for eight years and graduated from Aurelia High School in 1934. She attended the American Institute of Business, Des Moines, completing the course of study in April 1936.
Gladys worked as secretary to Grand President Elsie Fenton for the National Alpha Iota Sorority in Des Moines. She traveled extensively to conventions and meetings throughout the United States and Canada for the Sorority. In 1963 she received an award for 25 years of outstanding leadership and devotion to Alpha Iota Sorority.
In 1949, Gladys accepted a job at Strayer Business College in Washington, D. C. as a receptionist, financial secretary and instructor when she was needed. She also interviewed students and helped them with job placement. Gladys walked to and from Strayer, a distance of over a mile, almost every day.
Gladys retired from Strayer Business College in 1983 and moved to Storm Lake to be near her family. She enjoyed her nieces and nephews, leaving many fond memories for them to cherish. Among these memories are the many vacations that Gladys' sisters and their families spent with her in Washington, D. C.
She was an active volunteer for many years and enjoyed membership in the Soroptomist Club, Garden Club, Questers and the General Federation of Women's Clubs. Gladys was an active member of St. Mark Lutheran Church. Her hobbies included bird watching, enjoying the outdoors, reading books on any subject, playing cards and being an accomplished seamstress. She made dresses for her sisters when she was still in junior high.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law Ivan Howard.
Gladys' family includes three sisters: Hazel Howard, Ankeny, Jeanette Buckingham and her husband Craig, Alta, and Georgia Campbell and her husband Barney, Storm Lake; three nieces, Norma Halverson and her husband Craig, Newton, Jayne Nestor and her husband David, Sheldon, and Jan Johnson and her husband Mark, Des Moines; three nephews, Bruce Campbell and his wife Martha, Valley Center, Kansas, Brian Campbell, Valley Center, Kansas, and Alan Buckingham and his wife Kathi, Storm Lake; six great nieces: Ann Riemenschneider and her husband Jeff, Des Moines, Patrice Davis and her husband Bryan, Des Moines, Katie Halverson, Newton, Emily Nestor, Sheldon, Chelsea Campbell, Yankton, South Dakota and Carrie Jo Campbell, Valley Center, Kansas; five great nephews: Kurtis Halverson, Newton, Dan and Jeff Buckingham, Storm Lake, Kyle Nestor, Sheldon and Michael Campbell, Valley Center, Kansas; and two great-great nieces: Kelsey and Megan Riemenschneider, Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 19th, 2002, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake with the Reverend Connie Spitzack officiating. Burial will be in the Scandinavian Cemetery, rural Alta.
