Melvin Thomas Abbott, age 72, died in Columbus, Ohio, on September 27, 2001.

He attended Junior and Senior High School in Storm Lake, graduating in 1947.

He then enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard with the late Floyd Rice and served in Los Angeles, the Pacific, San Francisco, Boston and New York before retiring in 1967 as Senior Chief Journalist.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice Abbott; daughters Stella Jacobsen and Elaine Fullmer, both of Idaho Falls; son James and daughter Joanne Abbott, both of Lynbrook, N.Y.; daughter Kathleen Abbott of Chandler, Ariz; step-sons Henry Kaufman of Miami, Florida; and 11 grandchildren.

His mother, Estella Crouse, his grandparents, Alexander and Agnorah Haines, and his aunt and uncle, Neva and Otto Haines, all are interred, along with many other relatives, in St. Mary's Cemetery in Storm Lake.

A Funeral Mass on Tuesday, October 2, 2001, at St. Elizabeth church in Columbus will precede interment the following day at Resurrection Cemetery in nearby Lewis Center, Ohio.

Friends may honor his memory by contributing to Mount Carmel Hospice, 1144 Dublin Road, Columbus, Ohio, 43215.
