Berniece Ginkens, the daughter of Ole and Mae Suggitt Nelson, was born February 9, 1918, in Spencer. She was baptized at the Grace United Methodist Church of Spencer and grew up in the Greenville area. She graduated from the Greenville High School in 1935.
On April 4, 1938, Berniece married Howard Ginkens in Spencer, and five children were born to this union: Marion, Harry, Arlene, Joyce and Shirley. They farmed in the Clear Lake area, and on February 1, 1949, they moved to Rembrandt where Homer and Howard Ginkens opened the Ginkens Brothers Garage.
While living in the Rembrandt area, Berniece was active in the United Methodist Church and cooked for 27 years at the Rembrandt Consolidated School, retiring in 1987.
Mrs. Ginkens passed away at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake on October 15, 2001, at the age of 83. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Howard, on November 9, 1989; a son, Marion; a daughter, Arlene; two sisters and one brother.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Harry Ginkens and his wife, Nancy of Marion; Joyce Bennett and her husband, Dave of Rembrandt; Shirley Jones of St. Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Bernice Nelson of Sioux Rapids and Lucy Dalin of Worthington, Minn.; one brother-in-law and his wife, Harry and Bette Ginkens of Clear Lake; as well as other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services for Berniece Ginkens, 83, will be Thursday, October 18, at 1:30 p.m., at the Warner Chapel in Spencer with Pastor Emily Allen officiating. Interment will be at North Lawn Memorial Park, Spencer.
