Arnold Buchholz, 88, of Hartley, passed away at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley on Friday, April 6, 2001.

Arnold August, the son of William and Melinda (Hobermann) Buchholz, was born Nov. 24, 1912, in Grant Township, Buena Vista County. His childhood years were spent in Buena Vista County where he received his education at Zion Lutheran Parochial School, graduating from eighth grade in 1927.

On July 21, 1935, he married Viola Boettcher in Storm Lake. Following their marriage, the couple farmed near Storm Lake until moving to LeMars in 1962. While in LeMars, Mr. Buchholz was a salesman and area sales manager for Walnut Grove Feed Company. In 1967 he and his wife moved to Hartley.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hartley. He was active on the voter's assembly, the Men's Club and served the Iowa District West for eight years. He was also assisted the pastor of the church for two years ministering the shut-ins. Mr. Buchholz was also an honorary member of the Hartley Chamber of Commerce.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Viola on Aug. 31, 1999; one brother Aaron Buchholz and one grandson Jonathan Santi.

Mr. Buchholz is survived by three daughters and their husbands: Marlene and Delbert Mertens of Sioux City, Myrna and Kenneth Jones of Postville and Joyce and Raymond Santi of Sioux City; one son and his wife Leslie and Karen Buchholz of Spencer; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters: Marie Grote and Mathilda Sump, both of Storm Lake; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Buchholz will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, April 10, 2001, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hartley with Rev. David Ericksen officiating. Casketbearers will be Mr. Buchholz's grandchildren: Bruce Mertens, Michael Mertens, Barbara Mertens, Janna Jones Foels, Kent Jones, Jeffrey Santi, Jayson Santi and Emilee Buchholz.

Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley. Warner Funeral Home of Hartley is in charge of the arrangements.
