Harlow Graves, 81, a long time Buena Vista farmer, passed away Friday, April 13, 2001, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake of complications following cancer surgery in January.

Harlow Claire was born Dec. 28, 1919, in Harrison County, the son of Johnny and Lulu (Peterson) Graves. He attended country schools in Harrison County and high school in Logan.

On Feb. 18, 1942, he was united in marriage to Ila M. "Dot" Hughes in Papillion, Neb. The couple farmed in Harrison County until moving to Buena Vista County in 1945.

Mr. Graves was an active member and former trustee of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church where he also served on numerous committees in the church. He was a charter member of the Buena Vista Saddle Club and belonged to the Golden K Kiwanis Club. He had a great love for farming, the outdoors and fishing. He also raised Appaloosa horses and was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by one infant brother, Bernard.

Mr. Graves is survived by his wife Dot of Storm Lake; two daughters: Sharon and her husband Douglas Nielsen of St. Charles, Ill., and Carol and her husband Donald Hansen of Newell; two sons: Stanley and his wife Jean Graves of Daleville, Ala., and Richard and his wife Mary Graves of Storm Lake; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; numerous extended family members and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Graves were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2001, at Lakeside Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kenneth Bell of Storm Lake United Methodist Church officiating. Casketbearers were John Graves, Ryan Graves, Tony Graves, Eric Graves, Jeremy Hansen, Peter Nielsen, John Hudson and Charles McCarthy.

Burial was at the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. The Fratzke Funeral Home of Storm Lake was in charge of the arrangements.
