Wilbur "Wig" Wiegand, 89, a long time Storm Lake resident, passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake after a brief illness.

Wilbur J. "Wig," was born Feb. 26, 1912, in Hartley, the son of Fred J. and Grace (Meleck) Wiegand. He graduated from high school in Spirit Lake and then attended Iowa State Teacher's College (now the University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls.

On June 20, 1938, he married Amelia L. "Amy" Greenlander in Belmond. The couple moved to Storm Lake in 1950 where Mr. Wiegand later founded the Lake Electric Company.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, of Jewell Lodge 309, and on the founding board of Lake Creek Country Club. He also enjoyed fishing. Following his retirement, the couple wintered and then lived in Texas for 21 years, returning to Storm Lake in 1994.

Mr. Wiegand was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Amy on Jan. 1, 1998.

He is survived by one son and his wife Jon and Janet Wiegand of Storm Lake; one daughter and her husband Kay and Robert Kraai of Sioux City; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother Lynnwood and his wife Betty Wiegand of Sun City, Ariz.; one sister Lucille Sharp of Clearwater, Fla. and one sister-in-law Peg Kephart of Des Moines.

Memorial services for Mr. Wiegand will be held Friday, April 20, 2001, at the Fratzke Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Rev. Kenneth Bell of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church in Storm Lake will officiate at the 1:30 p.m. service.

Prior to the memorial service, a private family burial will be held at the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake.

Friends may call the Fratzke Funeral Home today, April 19, 2001, at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. where the family will be present to greet friends.
