Juanita Jean Hinkeldey - Gustafson, age 81, of Storm Lake (formally of Alta) passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community of Storm Lake.

Juanita Jean Hinkeldey-Gustafson, daughter of Warren and Vada (Canon) Hix, was born on May 20, 1928, in Odebolt, Iowa. She was baptized into the Christian faith at the Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Iowa, and was confirmed on June 4, 1948, by Pastor Otto Bahr at St. John Lutheran Church in Alta (Hanover). She graduated from Alta High School in 1946 and attended one year at the University of Iowa.

On December 31, 1947, Juanita married Harlan Hinkeldey. They were blessed with three children, Jaclyn, Dave, and Laurie. On August 1, 1998, Juanita married Stewart Gustafson.

Juanita was very active in church activities at St. John Lutheran: she was a co-founder of the annual German Feast; she was instrumental in designing and making the church paraments; and she held various offices in the LWML.

She was involved in many community activities such as a 4-H leader and the Cherokee County Fair Board.

Juanita was an excellent seamstress. She loved gardening, traveling, dancing, and spending time with family and friends.

Juanita passed away on May 5, 2010, in Storm Lake, Iowa, at the age of 81 years, 11 months, and 15 days.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harlan; her parents, Warren and Vada; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Henry and Ella (Grieme) Hinkeldey; twin granddaughters; and niece, Lisa (Hinkeldey) Stephan.

Juanita is survived by her husband, Stewart; her children and their spouses, Jaclyn and Jim Narwold, Dave and Janeen Hinkeldey, and Laurie and Mark Gustafson; her step-daughter and her spouse, Denise and Greyling Fredericksen; her grandchildren, Jonathan, Joshua, Joanna, and Joel Narwold, Amber Hinkeldey, Summer (Jason) Heeren, and Aaron Hinkeldey, Chad (Katie) Gustafson, Traci (James) Barkley, and Heather (Travis) Tweed; her step-grandchildren, Matthew (Traci) Fredericksen, Curt (Rachel) Fredericksen, and Christa (and friend Craig) Fredericksen; 7 great grandchildren; 4 step-great grandchildren; her brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Jerrold and Joan Hix; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harold and Lorraine Hinkeldey; nieces, nephews, and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, May 8, 2010, at the St. John Lutheran Church of Alta with Rev. Henry Kuhn officiating. Burial will be at St. John Lutheran Cemetery of Alta. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta is in charge of arrangements.
