George Engelmann - Feb. 22, 1913 - Mar. 18, 2001

George Engelmann, 88, passed away Sunday, March 18, 2001, at the Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake.

George Washington, the son of Rev. Otto and Marie (Greve) Engelmann, was born Feb. 22, 1913, in Pearl City, Ill. He was baptized in his father's church. The family moved to Magly, Ind., where his father pastored a church until 1925. From there the family moved to Fort Wayne, Ind., to serve at the Children's Home.

He was confirmed at St. John's Reformed Church in Fort Wayne. In 1930, Rev. Engelmann accepted the call to pastor at the Immanuel Reformed Evangelical and Reformed Church in rural Schaller.

Mr. Engelmann graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1931. Following graduation he was employed in the Storm Lake area.

On March 23, 1941, he married Violet Mauser. He was drafted into the Armed Forces in the fall of 1942 where he served in the Army as a radio operator. He was in the Infantry Division in Italy during World War II.

Upon receiving an honorable discharge in 1945, he returned home to farm in the Storm Lake area. He and his wife enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida until 1992.

Besides farming, Mr. Engelmann was an avid promoter of the game of horseshoes. He was instrumental in organizing the local leagues and was inducted into the Iowa Horseshoe Hall of Fame in 1982.

He was an active leader in his church and made serving the Lord, as well as others, a priority in life. Mr. Engelmann was also involved in many local farm organizations.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; six brothers and five sisters.

Mr. Engelmann is survived by his three children: Bonnie and her husband John Anderson of Maple Plain, Minn., Bruce and his wife Jill Engelmann of Storm Lake and Bob and his wife Kristen Engelmann of Waterloo; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; one brother Rev. Victor and his wife Irene Engelmann; one sister Lois Hess; numerous friends and relatives.

Funeral services for Mr. Engelmann were held Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in rural Schaller. Rev. Henry Huddleston, Rev. Douglas Corlew and Pastor Barry Engelmann officiated at the 10:30 a.m. service.

Pallbearers were Ben Anderson, Dan Anderson, Bryant Engelmann, Barry Engelmann, Brooke Engelmann, Mark Engelmann, Dennis Mauser and Ron Mauser.

Burial was in Immanuel Reformed UCC Church Cemetery in rural Schaller. Sliefert Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
