Byron "Chub" Hotchkiss, age 78, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died January 9, 2010, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell, Iowa.
Byron Clair Hotchkiss, the son of Herbert and Clara (Boehm) Hotchkiss, was born in Webb, Iowa, on April 17, 1931. Since he was a little boy, everyone has known Byron as “Chub.” He received his education in Marathon, graduating from the Marathon High School in 1948. He faithfully served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from October 2, 1952, to October 1, 1954.
In 1957, Chub was united in marriage to Marlene Hansen and they adopted two children: Clair Ray and Angie. They later divorced. Chub was employed at Posetick Manufacturing in Laurens, Iowa, from 1954 until his retirement in 1994. In 1992, he moved to Lakeside. He and his special friend, Darlene Gillman, attended many auctions which he enjoyed helping with. Chub’s favorite hobby was collecting caps. At one time, his collection included 13,000 caps, and he enjoyed acquiring them until his health prevented him.
Chub is survived by his children: Clair Ray Hotchkiss of Spencer, Iowa; and Angie Hotchkiss of New Jersey; 2 grandchildren: Justine and Angela; his special friend, Darlene Gillman of Lakeside, Iowa; his sister, Harriet Mortenson of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; his little dog, Buddy; many nieces; nephews; and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Pauline and Naomi; and two brothers: Hartley and Milton.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. Inurnment will be in the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon, Iowa. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
