Glen D. Carlson - Nov. 13, 1930 - May 26, 2008
Glen D. Carlson, age 77, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died May 26, 2008, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Glen Dwayne Carlson, son of Oscar and Blanche (Dunlap) Carlson was born November 13, 1930, on a farm near Webb, Iowa. He was baptized in the Presbyterian Faith. He graduated from Linn Grove (Iowa) High School in 1949.
Glen served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was stationed at Ft. Riley, Kansas, and in Korea where he was a communications operator. He received the CIB Medal and three Bronze Stars; he was honorably discharged in July 1953.
On July 26, 1953, Glen was united in marriage to Nola Meyer in the Marathon United Methodist Church. They were blessed with three children: Jocelyn, Scott and Gregory. They resided in the Storm Lake and Alta, Iowa, areas.
Glen was a member of the Alta United Methodist Church. He was a lifetime member of the Alta VFW Post 6172, serving as Commander and Adjutant. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 33 where he served as Commander and Forget Me Not Chairman. He received several awards for his dedication to the DAV including the Presidential Volunteer Award. He was always ready to help a person in need, especially the veterans.
Glen was a man with a great sense of humor who enjoyed traveling, fishing, playing cards and spending time at the ‘40’ with his brothers and sisters. He treasured the time he was able to spend with friends and family and always looked forward to visits from his children and grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by those who loved him.
He is survived by his wife, Nola; children: Jody (Lee) Bedell of Maple Valley, Washington; Scott (Colleen) Carlson of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, and Greg (Doreen) Carlson of Ida Grove, Iowa; grandchildren: Ben Bedell, Becky Bedell and Elizabeth Bedell, all of Maple Valley, Washington; Jeff Carlson and Jason Carlson, both of Sioux City, Iowa; Trevor Carlson, Brittany Carlson and Jordan Carlson, all of Ida Grove, Iowa; brothers: Oliver Carlson of Algona, Iowa; Oscar (Marilyn) Carlson of Onalaska, Wisconsin; Don (Debra) Carlson of Fort Dodge, Iowa; and Larry (Sheryl) Carlson of Alta, Iowa; his sister, Donna Stelling of Pocahontas, Iowa; extended family and many friends.
Glen was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Blanche; brother, Arvid Carlson; and his sister, Irma Harris.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 30, 2008, at the Alta United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery with full military rites by the Alta VFW Post #6172. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Friends may call Thursday, May 29, 2008, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present from 6-8:00 p.m.
