Arthur Ellwanger, 90, of Newell, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at the Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake.
James Arthur "Art", was born Feb. 15, 1910, the son of Charles A. and Grace C. (Waddicor) Ellwanger in Lake View. He was baptized and confirmed in Sac City and attended country school in Sac County and high school in Newell.
On Oct. 8, 1940, he was united in marriage to Mary Frances O'Rourke of Sac City at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sac City. The couple lived and farmed in Douglas Township, Sac County, until 1963. They then moved to Newell where Art was a custodian for several years and then began a career as a house painter. He and his wife were also custodians for the Allee Building until 1992. Mr. Ellwanger moved to the Newell Good Samaritan Home in 1996.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Mary in 1994; one brother Byron and two sisters: Phyllis Carnine and Jesse Chisholm.
Mr. Ellwanger is survived by two sons and their wives: Jim and Gloria Ellwanger of San Antonio, Texas, and Kendrick and Mary Ellwanger of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren; one brother Clayton and his wife Evelyn Ellwanger of Sac City; two sisters-in-law: Edna and Willard Schuler of Newell and Alice Potter of Palatine, Ill.; two brothers-in-law: Lester Carnine and his wife Jenny of Storm Lake and Cyril O'Rourke of Osceola; several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial for Mr. Ellwanger will be celebrated today, Jan. 20, 2001, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sac City. Father Larry McCarty will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service.
Pallbearers are Dennis Ellwanger, Terry O'Rourke, Dwight Ellwanger, Melvin A. Faber, Alan Ellwanger and Donald Schuler.
Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Sac City. Farber and Otteman Funeral Home of Newell is in charge of the arrangements.
