Lenard Petzoldt - Feb. 1, 1926 - May 27, 2008

Lenard Petzoldt, age 82, of Newell, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at Newell Good Samaritan Center.

Lenard Petzoldt was born on February 1, 1926, the son of John and Marie (Reher) Petzoldt in rural Grand Island, Nebraska. He attended grade school and graduated from Grand Island High School in 1944. Immediately upon graduation, Lenard entered the United States Navy and served his country until he was honorably discharged in July 1946.

On April 11, 1948, he was united in marriage to Edna Sorensen at the Lutheran Church in Dannebrog, Nebraska. Their union was blessed with four children: Chuck, Judy, Jim and Rick. Lenard and his family moved to Newell in November 1950, where he farmed until 1971. He then worked at the Newell Coop Elevator until he retired in April 1989.

Throughout his life, Lenard was very active; he was a member of Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, American Legion, the Newell Country Club, and the Sunday Bridge Club. He also enjoyed playing cards, golfing, fishing, and spending time with his family. His biggest joy was giving rides to his great-grandchildren in his golf cart.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Edna of Newell; children: Chuck (Marty) Petzoldt of Mason City, Iowa; Judy (Ron) Olson of Winnebago, Minnesota; Jim (Roni) Petzoldt of Sioux City, Iowa; Rick (Cindy) Petzoldt of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; grandchildren: Kelli Petzoldt, Jill (Matt) Weis, Amber (Brett) Bartel, Sarah Olson and friend Terry McMichael, Beth (Jason) Weiland, Reid (Sheryl) Olson, James Petzoldt, Jason Petzoldt and Bill (Carissa) Kemmis; 16 great-grandchildren; sister Florence Ruge of Grand Island; sisters-in-law Nora Swanson and Betty (Harold) Schuessler; extended family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law, Jens and Eva Sorensen; his sister and her husband, Irene and Lavern Rose; his brothers-in-law, Bob Swanson and Harry Ruge; and his great-granddaughter, Bobbi Kemmis.

Services for Mr. Petzoldt will be held Thursday, May 29, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell with Reverend Tom Dettmer officiating. Burial will follow in the Newell Cemetery with full military rites by the Newell American Legion. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 4:00—8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell where the family will be present from 6:00—8:00 p.m.
