Delbert McCoy - Nov. 1, 1932 - June 7, 2008
Delbert “Del” McCoy, age 75, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, June 7, 2008, in Storm Lake.
Delbert Dean McCoy, the son of Orpheus Creighton McCoy and Era Matilda (Lown) McCoy, was born on November 1, 1932, in Terril, Iowa. He spent his youth in the Clarkfield, Minnesota, area and graduated from Clarkfield High School in 1950. Del then continued his education at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, from which he graduated in 1954. He began teaching science and coaching football, basketball, and track at Alta High School in Alta, Iowa in 1956.
While teaching in Alta, Del met Carol Joann Radke. Del and Carol were united in marriage on July 23, 1961, at St. John Lutheran Church in Hanover (rural Alta). They were blessed with three children: Valerie, Vanessa, and David.
In 1969, Del also was awarded his masters degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. Del and Carol subsequently moved their family to Storm Lake where Del started a new job teaching biology and coaching football, basketball, and track at Storm Lake High School. He taught there for the rest of his teaching career until he retired in 1995.
Del and Carol spent many happy years together raising their family and attending the many school events in which their children participated, as well as those sports events Del coached.
A loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, Del lead a full and happy life. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake where he held various offices over the years and was a member of the Storm Lake Kiwanis Beavers. He enjoyed woodworking and refinishing furniture, reading, and especially gardening.
Del and Carol would have been married 47 years this coming July 23rd. Anyone who knew Del, knew his family was his first love and priority. He treasured every moment he spent with his children, and later his grandchildren. He also was a dear friend to so many and will be remembered by countless students and young athletes as a very respected coach and teacher in both the Alta and Storm Lake school systems. Del will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Carol, of Storm Lake; daughters Valerie Rosenthal and Vanessa (Jeff) Stewart, both of Alta; and son David (Kimberlynn) McCoy of O’Fallon, Missouri; grandchildren: Jacob (Amy) Stewart, Benjamin Rosenthal, Jackson Rosenthal, Logan McCoy and Preston McCoy; sisters Lucille (Frank) Rose of Spencer, Iowa, Colleen (Roger) Olson of Wood Lake, Minnesota, and Judith (Andy) Van Dorpe of Fargo, North Dakota; extended family and a host of friends.
