Obituary from the Sioux Rapid Press newspaper, Iowa, dated Thursday, December 12, 1940:

W. L. Clough, one of the pioneer residents of Buena Vista county, passed away at his home in Sioux Rapids early Saturday morning. He had been in failing health for some time, and in a critical condition for the past year, the last few weeks of which he was under the care of a nurse.

Several months ago Mr. Clough submitted to a major operation at a Des Moines hospital, and while he recovered sufficiently to be up and around for a while, he never regained his strength.

William Lee Clough was born April 3, 1870, on the old homestead in Lee township, Buena Vista county. His parents were Gardner S. and Laura Clough. At the age of 21, he and his brother, John F. Clough, took over the operation of the home place. This partnership continued until he was 24 years old, at which time the two brothers divided the farm, W. L. taking the south half and J. F. taking the north half. In 1900 W. L. took over the old homestead, which consisted of a quarter section of land. He erected a modern house on the place, spending most of his life there.

On May 22, 1894, Mr. Clough was united in marriage with Rose Mary Wengirt of Independence, Iowa. To this union were born three children, Leona Agnes (Mrs. George Brown) of Sioux Rapids, Mary Laura (Mrs. Roy Meadows) of Grimes, and George W. Clough of Mexico, Missouri. These, with the wife, Mrs. Rose Clough, survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one sister.

Funeral services for Mr. Clough were held Tuesday morning at 9:30 from the Sioux Rapids Catholic church, Reverend C. E. Farrelly of Laurens being in charge. Burial was made in Lone Tree cemetery under the direction of the Green Funeral Home.

Relatives from a distance attending these final services were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Meadows Sr. and son Stanley of Grimes, Mr. and Mrs. George Clough of Mexico, Missouri, George J. Wengirt of Independence, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Diederick and Marylin of Gilmore City.
