Russell Roberts, 72, of Sioux Rapids, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, in Mesa, Ariz.

Russell J. was born May 18, 1928, in Clay County. He was a man who dearly loved his wife, his children, and grandchildren. He was dedicated to his town and community around him. He put in 35 years of community service as mayor of Sioux Rapids and as a member of the Sioux Rapids Fire Department. He also served within his church. The Lord was his companion and he served him well in his last days. The last six years of traveling for Ranco Fertiservice was a joy. To him it wasn't a job, it was a vacation combined with work he loved.

Those who knew him were aware of the man within, a compassionate soul with a very soft heart covering a gruff exterior.

Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by his parents; his father- and mother-in-law Hubert and Elsie Adams; one daughter Barb Dye; two grandchildren: Paul Roberts and Christian Roberts and one cousin Bill Semple.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Marjorie Roberts of Sioux Rapids; two sons and their wives: Dennis and Karen Roberts of Sioux Rapids and Michael and Jill Roberts of Mesa, Ariz.; four daughters: Debra Roberts, Rebecca Roberts, Linda and her husband Tim Hermstad, all of Sioux Rapids and Shelley Roberts of Mesa, Ariz.; 25 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one cousin Dr. Douglas Roberts; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Roberts were held Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at the First United Methodist Church in Sioux Rapids. Rev. Harold Koughn officiated at the 10:30 a.m. service.

Pallbearers were members of the Sioux Rapids Volunteer Fire Department. Honorary pallbearers were Wes Bernard, Marc Bertness, Larry Mills, Don Yungbluth, Rob Henderson, Dave Huntley, Gary Edwardson, John Thompson, Bob Reno, Dick Vail, Troy Clapp, Darrell Brugman and Carl Miller.

Burial was in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
