Grace Weaver - Jan. 3, 1940 - June 11, 2008

Grace Weaver, age 68, of Marathon, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Grace Ellen Staples was born on January 3, 1940, in Lake City, Iowa, to Clifford and Ethel (Hoyle) Staples. She attended grade school in Lohrville, Iowa, and later graduated from Hayes Township School in rural Storm Lake, Iowa, in 1957. Her younger years were spent in the Storm Lake area. Grace worked at the movie theater as a ticket taker and later at the downtown bookstore.

On June 28, 1959, Grace was united in marriage to Alvin “Tuck” Weaver at the Baptist Church in Storm Lake. Shortly after their wedding, Tuck and Grace moved to Mason City, Iowa, for a short time before making their home in Marathon, Iowa. This union was blessed with four children: Alvin Jr., Michael, Constance, and Candace.

Grace was a very active community member. She was a member of the Marathon United Methodist Church and served on the Marathon City Council as well as the Baseball/Softball Community organization. Additionally, Grace worked at Buena Vista University and the Marathon Farmer’s Coop. She was not scared of hard work and demonstrated this value by the many hours she would spend over the years tirelessly picking up rocks and walking beans.

Her family and grandchildren were the love of her life. Grace found much pride and enjoyment in spending time with her loved ones and friends. She was a great friend who possessed a generous personality. Over the years, Grace enjoyed playing golf, being outdoors, attending craft shows and auctions, playing cards, cooking, baking pies, and making homemade noodles. She had a great sense of humor and was quick-witted. She will forever be remembered as a loving wife and devoted mother and grandmother.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Michael (Nancy) Weaver of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; daughter, Connie (Ruben) Mendoza of Lakeside, Iowa; daughter, Candi (Larry) Nielsen of Newell, Iowa; grandchildren: Michelle (Andy) Riesner, Cassie Weaver, Amber Weaver, Brandon Nielsen, Alex Weaver, Bryce Nielsen and Ian Morales; great granddaughter, Katie Riesner; brothers: William “Bill” (Flo) Staples of Sheldon, Iowa, and Raymond “Butch” (Colleen) Staples of Kerrville, Texas; several nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents; her infant son, Alvin, Jr.; her husband, Alvin “Tuck” Weaver in March 2007; sisters: Clara Kerner and Donna Hunt; brothers: Roy Staples, Clifford “Bud” Staples, Charlie Staples, Ken Potts and Don Potts.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Weaver will be held on Monday, June 16, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Marathon. Burial will be in Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Marathon where family will be present for the entire visitation time.
