Calvin R. “Cal” Tuttle, age 79, of Newell, died Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Center in Newell.

Calvin Richard Tuttle was born February 9, 1929, on a farm in Douglas Township, Sac County, Iowa, the son of Leonard C. and Eunice Grace (Menier) Tuttle. Calvin attended country school for one year, after which he went to school in Newell. He enjoyed sports during his youthful school days before graduating from Newell High School in 1947.

Following high school graduation, Calvin joined the United States Air Force. He served honorably during the era between World War II and the Korean Conflict.

On March 2, 1949, Calvin was united in marriage to Ardis Husted at Randolph Field Air Force Base near San Antonio, Texas. The couple was blessed with four children: Loretta “Lorie”, Mark, Scott and James.

Calvin was a steadfast steward of the land for his entire life. He loved farming and the family-oriented lifestyle it made possible. He was in the dairy business through 1987, and he had a seed corn business for many years.

Calvin attended the Methodist Church in his youth, but was baptized in the Lutheran faith on the occasion of his daughter’s baptism. He has been a faithful and very active member of Nain Lutheran Church in Newell since 1951, serving in many capacities and in several offices.

Calvin was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, including his years of membership in the Consistory and as a Shriner. He also was generous in the time he gave back to his community, serving three terms on the Loring Hospital Board of Directors. He also helped spearhead the effort to establish a medical clinic in Newell.

An avid fisherman, Calvin escaped with his fishing rod whenever possible. He was a licensed pilot and thoroughly enjoyed flying his Piper Cherokee airplane. He owned a motorcycle, and he and Ardis liked to slip away for motorcycle rides. He treasured the special trips he took with his sons.

A loving husband and devoted father and grandfather, family meant the world to Calvin. His caring presence will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 59 years, Ardis Tuttle of Newell; his daughter, Lorie Colshan of Newell; his son, Mark (Diane) Tuttle of Newell; his son Scott (Lori) Tuttle of Ogden, Iowa; his son, James Tuttle of Newell; grandchildren Ryan Siddens, Dr. Jenny Tuttle, Aaron Tuttle, Chris Neve, Dr. Joel Tuttle, Kristin Tuttle and Ross Tuttle; one sister, Helen Cassidy of California; a brother-in-law, Pete Petrosky of Eddy, Texas; a sister-in-law, Elva (Peter) Jorgensen of Santa Barbara, California; nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.
