Darrell Jessen, 73, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, in Clay County.
Darrell Dean, the son of Lester and Ethel (Lennert) Jessen was born on May 19, 1927, in Danbury. He attended grade school in both Battle Creek and Correctionville. He attended Correctionville High School.
He served his country honorably in World War II in the United States Navy. He enlisted in the Navy on Aug. 6, 1944, and received his honorable discharge on Nov. 25, 1947, earning the rank of AS S2c S1c.
On March 25, 1948, he was united in marriage to Elaine Olson. To this union three children were born: Steve, Patricia and Stewart. In 1993, he was united in marriage to Gerri Hale in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Mr. Jessen was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Linn Grove for many years where he was both baptized and confirmed.
He worked at National By-Products in Linn Grove before he went to work for Spencer Foods. Later, he came back to Linn Grove and ran Jessen's Rendering Service. He was always doing his part in the community in ways by serving on the Linn Grove Volunteer Fire Department, as City Clerk of Linn Grove, as a member of the Gillett Grove city council and later, by working to beautify Gillett Grove. He enjoyed fishing, listening to music and planting flowers in the garden.
Mr. Jessen was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife Gerri Jessen of Gillett Grove; two sons: Steven and his wife Amy Jessen and Stewart and his wife Rebecca Jessen, both of Linn Grove; one daughter Patricia Anderson and her special friend Gus Reyes of Storm Lake; two step-sons: Sgt. Michael Medina and his wife Teri of Las Vegas, Neb., and Jeffrey Medina and his fiance Alonna Atley of Iowa City; one brother Arlo Jessen of Las Vegas, Neb.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Jessen were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Linn Grove with Pastor Durwood Clauson officiating.
Pallbearers were Sgt. Jeremiah Jessen, Joshua Jessen, Mark Anderson, Chad Anderson, Shane Jessen, Troy Heine and Rick Keith.
Honorary bearers were Stephanie Soliman, Larry Harms, Bob Berger, Tom Gross and Steve Koenig.
Burial was in Barnes Township Cemetery in Linn Grove. Sliefert Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
