Philip Thornton, 93, passed away suddenly on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at the Buena Vista County Hospital.
Philip Chandler, the son of Manly Philip and Mabel (Chandler) Thornton, was born Sept. 4, 1907, in Adrian, Minn. As a young child, he moved with his family to Worthington, Minn., where he graduated from high school at the age of 15.
He attended South Dakota State College for one year and then graduated from Morningside College in 1929. He worked his way through college in the Feltman and Curme Shoe Store in Sioux City, and on the day of his graduation, he became manager.
On July 9, 1933, he was united in marriage to Ruth M. Miller at the United Methodist Church. In the fall of 1936, the couple moved to Storm Lake and established the Smart But Thrifty Store, which they operated until they retired in 1972.
Mr. Thornton was very active in the Storm Lake community. He was a Life Member of the United Methodist Church in which he held various offices. He was a 50-year member of Eastern Star and Past Patron; a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge; a 50-year member of U.C.T. and Kiwanis and a former Abu Beckr Shriner.
He was a charter member of the Isaac Walton League and a recipient of the Judge Tobin Award for that organization. He was also a member of the founding board of directors for Methodist Manor; a member of the park commission when the shelter house was built; a member of the Buena Vista County Historical Society; Friends of the Library; Northwest Chapter Iowa Archaeology Society; a Storm Lake Chamber of Commerce member and a member of the Sanford Museum Association in Cherokee.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister Mildred Fry and one brother Allan Thornton.
Mr. Thornton is survived by his wife Ruth of Storm Lake; twin sons: Dr. Manly and his wife Peg Thornton of Elhart, Ind., and Dr. Melvin and his wife Rosemary Thornton of Lincoln, Neb.; one daughter Mary and her husband Larry Turner of Cedar Rapids; one brother George Thornton; two sisters: Alyce Pratt and Joyce Johnson; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Thornton will be held Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, at United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Rev. Kenneth Bell and Rev. Harold Bartz will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service.
Visitation will be today from 4 to 8 p.m. today with an Eastern Star service at 7 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake.
Pallbearers are Mr. Thornton's grandchildren Michael P. Thornton, Lynne (Thornton) Sasmazer, Philip Charles Thornton, Jeffrey Thornton, Joel Thornton, Jay Thornton, Jennifer Thornton-Kolbe, Patrick A. Turner, Megan (Turner) Ginsberg and Todd T. Turner.
Honorary bearers are Marvin Molitor, Dr. T.E. and Alice Shea, Ben and Shirley Strait, Dr. Ron and Jewell Dierwechter, Ed and Elenor Shaw, John and Carol Pritchard and Gilbert and Pauline Douglas.
Burial will be at Buena Vista Memorial Park in Storm Lake. Sliefert Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
