Marie Grote - Dec. 29, 1915 - Aug. 26, 2008

Marie Grote, age 92, of Storm Lake, died on Tuesday, August 26, 2008, at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Marie Buchholz was born December 29, 1915, in Grant Township, Buena Vista County, Iowa, northeast of Storm Lake, to William and Malinda (Hoberman) Buchholz. She was baptized on January 9, 1916, by Reverend Albrecht at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake. She attended Zion Lutheran parochial school and was confirmed by Reverend Albrecht on April 13, 1930.

On September 13, 1936, Marie was united in marriage to Roy H. Grote. The couple was blessed with four sons: Galen, Gerald, Garlan and Gary. The family resided in Storm Lake until 1943 when they moved to an acreage in Grant Township. In 1965, they moved back to Storm Lake. In 1998, Marie was one of the first residents of Lake Pointe Villas.

Marie was a housewife and worked at Buena Vista Hospital for 18 years as a nurse’s aide after the family moved back to Storm Lake in 1965. Marie loved her church and served in various group offices, both at Zion Lutheran and Grace Lutheran in Storm Lake. She taught Sunday School and sang in the church choir for many years.
Marie was an avid gardener, even at her Lake Pointe Villa apartment. She loved flowers and caring for them, and she will be remembered for her “green thumb.”

Marie also was active in community affairs in Storm Lake where she volunteered many hours at the Senior Center. She served as an advocate for the elderly through the Northwest Iowa Aging organization and was especially pleased to receive an award as Outstanding Volunteer from the governor of Iowa.

Above all, Marie loved her family. It was her pleasure to remember all of them with hand-written greetings on their special days, and the family numbered over 50 at the time of her passing including her four sons: Galen (Sheila) Grote of Sac City, Iowa; Gerald (Lois) Grote of Richmond, Minnesota; Garlan (Linda) Grote of Garner, Iowa; and Gary (Mona) Grote of Wausau, Wisconsin; 13 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, plus all their respective spouses. Marie is also survived by her sister, Matilda Sump of Storm Lake, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers: Aaron and Arnold, and her husband, Roy.

Marie was known by all for her caring attitude, her desire to help others however she could, and for her faith in the Triune God. May God bless the memory of Marie Grote.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Steven Schulz officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call Monday, September 1, 2008, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home, 300 Cayuga Street in Storm Lake where the family will be present.
