Virdel F. Bringle - Sept. 1, 1923 - Nov. 13, 2008

Virdel Flora Bringle, age 85, of Newell, Iowa, died on Thursday, November 13, 2008, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center.

Virdel Flora Bringle was born on September 1, 1923, in Plum Hill Township, Illinois, daughter of Oscar Hoelscher and Mary Brinkman Hoelscher.

The fifth child of nine siblings, Virdel and her family lived on various farms in Plum Hill, Okawville, and Irvington, Illinois. She was confirmed in the Christian faith on April 2, 1939. Her confirmation verse was John 15:5: “I am the vine. Ye are the branches. Ye who abide in me and I in him shall bear much fruit.” This verse was to remain a theme throughout Virdel’s Life.

When Virdel was eighteen, she and her siblings were featured on the front page of the St. Louis Globe Democrat holding a victory sign with the caption, “a V-conscious Family.” It was unique because all nine children had names beginning with the letter V: Velma, Virgil, Virginia, Vernice, Virdel, Vernon, Vera, Verle, and Vilas.

As a young woman, Virdel worked at Emerson Electric, a war production plant in St. Louis, from 1943-1948. It was during this time that her older brother Virgil was killed in Belgium on March 18, 1945.

She married Roy F. Chesney on September 1, 1945, in Irvington, Illinois. To this union, four children were born: Nelson, Harriett, Gloria, and Frederic. Roy was called to the ministry in 1948, and together, he and Virdel served churches in Pershing, Missouri, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Glencoe, Minnesota, and Newell, Iowa. They moved to Newell in 1962, and Roy died in 1966.

Virdel began working at the Newell Providence School District in January 1970 as a school cook. After 26 1/2 years of service, Virdel retired in May 1996.

Virdel married George Bringle on August 23, 1974, at the First Congregational Church, Newell, Iowa. This added five more children to the family circle: Charles, Donald, Katherine, Martha, and Scott. They remained married until George died in August 1997. The two were very active in their churches and community. They enjoyed dancing, golfing, playing cards, and traveling. Virdel was a member of the Mrs. 500 Club and the Sunday Evening Bridge Club. She was also a 43-year member of the Order of Eastern Star. Virdel also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and was active in the Women’s Fellowship of the First Congregational Church. In addition, she enjoyed baking and sewing.

Virdel was preceded in death by her parents Oscar and Mary Hoelscher, her first husband Roy Chesney, her second husband George Bringle, brother Virgil, sisters Velma Randoll and Virginia Randoll, brothers-in-law Joe Kudelka, Les Rallo, Clarence Randoll and Rudy Randoll. Survivors include her children, Nelson (Nancy) Chesney of Bettendorf, Iowa; Harriett Chesney (Stephen Kayes) of Mobile, Alabama; Gloria Chesney of Farmington, Minnesota; and Frederic (Irish) Chesney of Mansfield, Texas. Her step children include Chuck (Judy) Bringle of St. Augustine, Florida; Don (Kathy) Bringle of Waukee, Iowa; Kate Bringle (Maureen Murphy) of Arroyo Grande, California; Marti (Duane) Christensen of Missouri Valley, Iowa; and Scott (Rhonda) Bringle of Shakopee, Minnesota. She is also survived by sisters Vernice Kudelka of Florissant, Missouri, and Vera Rallo of St. Louis, Missouri, and brothers Vernon (Darlene) Hoelscher of St. Louis, Missouri, and Verle (Matilda) Hoelscher of Belleville, Illinois; and Vilas (Frieda) Hoelscher of Centralia, Illinois; sister-in-law Alice (Victor) Shubert of Coulterville, Illinois. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 18, at the First Congregational Church in Newell. Burial will be in the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ Cemetery in Stone Church, Illinois, on Thursday, November 20. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Newell is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be 5-8:00 p.m., Monday, November 17, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell with an Eastern Star service at 7:00 p.m.
