Donald D. Galbraith - May 24, 1928 - Nov. 29, 2008
Donald D. “Shorty” Galbraith, age 80, of Newell, Iowa, died on Saturday, November 29, 2008, in rural Newell, the result of a pickup accident.
Donald Dean “Shorty” Galbraith was born May 24, 1928, on a farm east of Sac City, Iowa, to Julian and Alice (Mooney) Galbraith. He was baptized and confirmed at “The Galbraith Church” south of Newell and graduated in May of 1945 from Newell High School.
Shorty entered the service in 1949 and served at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, Fort Sill, Oregon, Camp Otterberry, Indiana, and Fort Hood, Texas. He was honorably discharged in 1951.
Don and June Barnes were united in marriage on June 18, 1953. Three children were born to this union: Gerri Dee, Richard Shannon and Alicia Lee. Several years later they divorced.
Shorty farmed for several years south of Newell before moving to Lake City in 1957 where he worked as a Moorman Feed salesperson for many years. While there, he was a member of the Lake City Legion, was on a softball team, and served on the Lake City Fire Department for 20 years. He also clerked at the Lake City Sale Barn, even after moving back to Newell in 1977.
After he moved back to Newell, Shorty continued farming on his parents’ farm. He held various offices at the United Methodist Church, was a faithful Lions’ Club member for over 20 years, and he was a good member of the American Legion Post 193. He was always a willing worker when asked to donate his time. Shorty and Donna enjoyed their Euchre card club group. Shorty was a sports enthusiast and was an Iowa Hawkeye fan, but his greatest joy was following all the Newell-Fonda sports and sharing the teams’ happy moments with their many “wins.”
Survivors include his three children: Gerri and husband Norbert of Honolulu, Hawaii; Richard and wife Donna of Wells, Nevada, and their son, Mark, and his wife, Kelley; and Alicia of Scottsdale, Arizona; several grandchildren; his brother, Lloyd (Jeanette) Galbraith of Newell; two nieces and two nephews: Terry, Theresa, Toni and Tom, and their families; cousins and many friends. Also surviving Shorty is his special friend, Donna, and her family: Kim and Mary Beth of Elgin, Illinois; Terri and Doug, Stephanie, Amy and Michael of Blair, Nebraska; and Duane and Cindy, Cole and Morgan of Newell.
Don was preceded in death by his mother, Alice, in January 1997, and by his father, Julian, in December 1998.
Funeral services for Mr. Galbraith will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2008, at the United Methodist Church in Newell. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery with full military rites by American Legion Post 193. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Friends may call from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 2nd, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00.
A memorial fund in Shorty’s memory has been established.
