Verna Stone - Feb. 8, 1915 - Jan. 3, 2007

Verna Stone, age 91, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, January 3, 2007, at her home in Storm Lake.

Verna Beatrice Hansen was born February 8, 1915, in Alta, Iowa, to Hans Peter and Anna Christine (Henricksen) Hansen. She was raised in her parents’ home near Alta along with her two brothers, Melvin and Donald, and her sisters, Esther and Lorraine. Verna learned her excellent work ethic early in life as she helped on the family farm, raising chickens, gathering eggs and working in their large garden. She attended school in Alta and graduated from Alta High School in 1934. Verna then completed another year of her education at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake.

On January 16, 1938, Verna was united in marriage to Earl Virgil Stone at Elk Baptist Church in Alta. The couple was blessed with four children: Jacqueline, Vernon, Kenneth and Leanne. Verna and Earl raised their family on a farm northwest of Rembrandt where she kept a warm and comfortable home for her loved ones. Farm life meant hard work, but Verna and Earl were partners in life and shared the workload together. They retired to Storm Lake in 1982.

A faithful member of First Baptist Church in Storm Lake, Verna was involved in many church activities, always happy to help out where she could. She loved people and always welcomed friends and family to her home. Verna was a good cook and gracious hostess—no one ever entered her home without being offered food of some kind. She enjoyed entertaining and always had her camera ready to snap photos—often of everyone sitting at the table eating. She lovingly created picture albums of her photos for her children and grandchildren. Verna also enjoyed crafts and liked to read. She made quilts for everyone in her family. She loved to play cards with friends and neighbors and in her later years enjoyed playing games like Skip-bo and Uno with her grandchildren. Ultimately, it was family that was most important to Verna. Her quiet caring ways will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Vernon and wife Carol Stone of Sun City West, Arizona; son Kenneth and wife Sue Stone of Rembrandt, Iowa; daughter Leanne Lovstad of Storm Lake and fiancé Pat Mohr of Galva, Iowa; eight grandchildren: Mahlon Stone, Veronica Stone, Stephanie Estling, Jason Lovstad, Ryan Lovstad, Josh Lovstad, Sonya Geisinger and Jeff Stone; five great-grandchildren: Samantha Farrenkopf, Zamara Geisinger, Nathan Heatley, Daniel Romero and KaSaundra Romero; two great-great-grandchildren: Trinity Heatley and Nicole Farrenkopf; one sister, Lorraine Warren of Alta, Iowa; sisters-in-law Lovenetta Hansen of Alta, Jean Stone of Storm Lake and Clarine Heathman of Humboldt, Iowa; many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Earl; her daughter Jacqueline; her brothers: Melvin Hansen and Donald Hansen; and her sister Esther Spurlock.

Funeral service for Mrs. Stone will be held on Monday, January 8, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Tom Hinshaw officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
