Joseph P. Arnts - Feb. 17, 1932 - Feb. 24, 2007
Joseph P. Arnts, age 75, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and formerly of the Alta, Iowa, area died Saturday, February 24, 2007, at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Joseph Paul Arnts was born in Storm Lake, Iowa, on February 17, 1932, to Bernard and Zena (Lansink) Arnts. Joe received his education at Maple Valley Country School #8 for eight years before graduating from Alta High School in 1949.
In 1932, Joe was baptized at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Schaller, where he later received his confirmation. He was an active, life-long member of St. Joseph’s parish where he was a choir member and parish council member, and served as a CCD teacher, church director, Lector, Eucharist minister, greeter and usher. He often took communion to shut-ins and was a Knights of Columbus member since 1951.
After high school, Joe worked for a neighbor on the farm for one and a half years. Then he helped his dad until the spring of 1956. At that point he started farming on his own near Hanover (rural Alta). The summer of 1956 was so dry that Joe didn’t pick an ear of corn. In 1957, he rented a farm near New Richland, Minnesota, where he would meet his future bride. Joe farmed for a year in Minnesota until his father became ill, at which point, he moved back to Iowa to help his brother continue farming the home place.
On August 29, 1959, Joe was united in marriage to Eileen Broulik at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Owatonna, Minnesota. They were blessed with six children: Theresa, Patricia, Margaret, Karen, Bernard and David. They would make their home in the Alta area where Joe was a successful farmer.
Joe was on the ASC township committee for many years. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, fishing, woodworking and playing cards. He was always interested in soil conservation. Consequently, he was one of the first in Maple Valley township to contour farm and was awarded various conservation awards. He would later add terraces to his farm. Above all, Joe loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He took great pride in their lives and accomplishments. Joe will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 47 years, Eileen, of Storm Lake; six children and twenty-one grandchildren: Theresa Elgin and husband Les of Adair, Iowa, and their children Jason and Elizabeth; Patricia Mattson and husband Lance of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and their children Jesse, Joseph and Tyler; Margaret Anderson and husband Denny of Lawton, Iowa, and their children Rebecca, Benjamin and Michelle; Karen Boyer and husband Joe of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and their children Meagan, Dominic, Monica and Faith; Bernard Arnts and wife Peggy of Alta, Iowa, and their children Kathleen, Luke, Grace and Joelle; David Arnts and wife Cheryl of Alta, Iowa, and their children Rachael, Matthew, Ethan, Jacob and Emily; sister Mary Rath and husband Mike of Grand Meadow, Minnesota; brother John Arnts of Clarence, Missouri; twin sister Josephine Goeser of Omaha, Nebraska; brother-in-law Harold Ness of Rembrandt, Iowa; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Bernard and Rita Dietz of Owatonna, Minnesota, and Luke and Reone Broulik of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota; along with many extended family members and friends.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Zena Arnts; infant brother, Francis; sister, Sr. Elise (Agnes) Arnts; sister, Margaret (Arnts) Ness; sister-in-law, Mary Ann (Taylor) Arnts; and brother-in-law, Vincent Goeser.
