Peter F. Laven, Sr. - Dec. 19, 1943 - Mar. 1, 2007
Peter F. (Pete) Laven, Sr., age 63, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Thursday, March 1, 2007, at his home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Pete was born on December 19, 1943, in Mankato, MN, son of William M. Laven, Sr. and Francis R. (Keinz) Laven. He was baptized at Saints Peter & Paul’s Catholic Church in Mankato, MN, and later confirmed. He attended school and graduated from Saints Peter and Paul’s Catholic School in 1961.
On September 28, 1963, Pete married Marilyn Rose Techau at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Owatonna, MN. This marriage was blessed with 6 children. Pete was co-owner of Laven’s Northwest Monument along with his wife, Marilyn.
Pete was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake where he was a Cantor, Eucharistic Minister and Usher. He was a Knights of Columbus 3rd – 4th Degree member and past Grand Knight, Officer of a Degree Team and Advocate. In addition, Pete was active with the Capital Campaign, Altar/Baptismal renovation. He was a member of The Storm Lake Chamber, Awaysis Pledge Drive, Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited and St. Mary’s Booster Club. HE LOVED LIFE AND ENJOYED SPENDING TIME WITH PEOPLE. His smile will live with us forever!
Much enjoyment was found in golfing, hunting, fishing, bowling (KC Hall of Famer), playing cards, playing the guitar and serving as Bingo Chairmen at the KC Hall. He cherished and thoroughly enjoyed the time he spent with his family, and proudly watched his children and grandchildren play sports. The Annual SM Spaghetti Dinner was a special event in Pete’s life. He was very proud of St. Mary’s Church and School.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Marilyn of Storm Lake; his children: Brenda (Doug) Erps of Grimes, Thomas (Jill) Laven of Bondurant, William III (Leigh) Laven of Storm Lake, Peter Jr.(Sara) Laven of Okoboji, Stacy (Matt) Huff of Indianola and Angela Laven of Storm Lake and her special friend Jeremy Stangl of Manilla, Iowa. Grandchildren: Kayla, Amanda, Connor Erps (Brenda), Mariah, Myles and MacKale Laven (Thomas), Madison, Mackenzie, Mason Laven (William III), Lauren, Jackson Laven (Peter Jr.), Jordan, Cooper Huff (Stacy). Brothers William Jr. and Robert Laven both of Minnesota. Two sisters: Kathleen (Katie) Roozen of Owatonna, MN, and Patricia Preston (Warren) of Concord, NH; as well as many extended family members and friends.
Preceding Pete in death were his parents, sister Delores and her husband Dean Russell, sister-in-law Margaret Laven and grandson Dylan Erps.
Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Bruce Lawler celebrating the mass. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Friends may call anytime after 3:00 pm on Monday, March 8, 2007, where family will be present from 5-8:00 pm. The Knights of Columbus Honor Guard will start at 6:30 pm, a parish vigil service will be held at 7:00 pm followed by a Knight of Columbus Rosary, all at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.
