Eleanor M. Miller - Mar. 12, 1909 - Apr. 5, 2007

Eleanor Miller, age 98, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Thursday, April 5, 2007, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Eleanor Mary Miles was born March 12, 1909, in Hayes Township, Buena Vista County, Iowa, near Storm Lake to Edward and Anna (McTigue) Miles. She was baptized as an infant and in 1921 confirmed her faith at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. She received her education in St. Mary’s School in Storm Lake, graduating from high school with the Class of 1926. Her lifelong love of music shone as she earned a teaching certificate for piano as a young woman. Eleanor worked as a telephone operator for a year following her high school graduation.

On October 11, 1927, Eleanor was joined with Philip George Miller in holy matrimony at St. Mary’s Church in Storm Lake. The couple was blessed with nine children: Edward Philip, Joan Marie, Jean Ann, Marilyn Ruth, Robert John, Nancy Catherine, Judith Annette, James Anthony and Timothy Harold. Eleanor and Philip were married for over 35 years at the time of Philip’s death on April 18, 1963.

Eleanor lived a busy and active life, caring for her family and always looking out for their welfare. A faithful member of St. Mary’s Church in Storm Lake, Eleanor shared her love for the Lord and her talent for piano by serving as organist for her parish. She was a member of the Legion of Mary, Catholic Daughters of America and the ladies guild at St. Mary’s. She belonged to two cards clubs, a neighborhood club, Mothers of Twins and V. F. W. Ladies Auxiliary. In addition to playing the piano beautifully, Eleanor counted cross word puzzles, Scrabble, plays, concerts and travel among her many interests. Trips to Branson, Missouri, Nashville, Tennessee, Niagra Falls and the Amish country in Pennsylvania were especially memorable to her. A loving wife and devoted mother, Eleanor’s family was always dear to her heart. Her quiet, caring ways will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Joan (Gordon) Burns of Urbandale, Iowa; Jean Ann (Richard) Kestel of Arnolds Park, Iowa; Marilyn (Duane) Schimmer of Sutherland, Iowa; Robert (Sondra) Miller of Rock Valley, Iowa; Nancy Greaves of Fairfax, Virginia; Judith (Jim) Twohig of Jackson, Nebraska; James (Joy) Miller of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Timothy (Cylene) Miller of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 25 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Philip; son Edward Philip on February 16, 2001; an infant son in 1940; brothers James Miles, Edward Miles, Joseph Miles, Raymond Miles and Arthur Miles.
