Donald W. Anderson - June 29, 1918 - Mar. 30, 2010

Donald W. Anderson, age 91, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, Iowa.

Donald Wayne Anderson, the son of B.H. and Beulah (Swart) Anderson was born in Marcus, Iowa, on June 29, 1918.

Donald grew up in the Marcus, Iowa, area, graduating from Marcus High School in 1935. Don served his country during World War II. He was inducted into the United States Army on May 20, 1942, and honorably discharged on November 21, 1945, from Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. He served five years in the South Pacific as an Airplane Instrument Mechanic. He was a member of the 75th Bombardment Squadron.

Donald was united in marriage to Norma M. Geisinger on October 5th, 1941, on the family farm near Cornell, Iowa. To this union three children were born: Judy, Paul and R. Todd.

The couple began their marriage in Cherokee, Iowa, where Don worked for the Chesterman Bottle Company. They lived in northwest Iowa, settling in the Sioux Rapids area. Don was known for Don’s Hamburger Shop and Don’s Food Market. He retired in 1980. His retirement years included wintering in Texas, golfing, fishing, playing cards, painting, drawing, spending time with family and going to coffee with the guys.

Don was a member of the First United Church in Sioux Rapids. He was a 50 year Mason; a member of Eastern Star; a charter member and past officer of the Little Sioux Golf Club and a lifelong member of the American Legion.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Norma of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; his daughter, Judy Vincent of Linn Grove, Iowa; his son, Paul (Cheryl) Anderson of Linn Grove, Iowa; and his son, R. Todd of Polk City, Iowa; eight grandchildren: Chuck (Wendy) Vincent; Beth Vincent; Mark (Robin) Anderson; Chad Anderson; Laura Anderson; Linda Anderson; Katie (Pete) Kragel and Aaron (Sarah) Anderson; five great grandchildren: Taylor, Trev, and Tucker Kragel and Maggie and Finn Anderson; one sister, Lucille Carey of Marcus, Iowa; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Wendell Anderson and his wife, Dorothy, and his brother-in-law, Mark Carey.

A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 3, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Church in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. Visitation will take place on Friday, April 2, 2010, from 6-8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. Burial will be at a later date in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
