Eva Bonebrake, age 99, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, December 16, 2007, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell, Iowa.
Eva Mae Combes, the daughter of Bert E. and Eva Elda (Morris) Combes, was born January 8, 1908, on a farm south of Emmetsburg, Iowa. She was educated in Hayes Consolidated School and Storm Lake High School. On June 30, 1926, she married Harry Bonebrake in the First Baptist Church in Storm Lake. They became the parents of three children: Burton, Bonita and June. The couple made their home for seven years in Pennsylvania and Maryland before returning to Storm Lake in 1933.
Eva was an active member of First Baptist Church in Storm Lake as long as her health permitted. She served as deaconess and in various Ladies Aid offices. A homemaker for nearly sixty years, Eva began making pies and other baked goods at the request of friends and others in the community. This became a business for Eva, and she was well-known for her delicious products in and around Storm Lake.
She was honored to be one of the grand marshalls, along with baseball great Bob Feller, for the 1995 Storm Lake Star Spangled Spectacular parade, which followed the theme, “Baseball, Mom and Apple Pie.”
Eva was active in the Buena View Federated Garden Club for many years. Her hobbies included gardening, flower arranging, bird watching, sewing, reading and letter writing. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend, and a caring neighbor.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Burton and wife Marjorie of Lakeside, Iowa; daughters: Bonita and husband Don Kier of Newell; June and husband Gary Swain of Ruthven, Iowa; grandchildren: Penny Kaelber and husband John of Iowa City, Iowa; Tammy Horton and husband John of Tecumseh, Kansas; Scott Bonebrake and wife Bonnie of Storm Lake; Nikki Waters and husband Phil of Hayward, California; Karen Yost and husband Dion of Sterling, Kansas; Mark Wilbur and wife Lisa of Centennial, Colorado; Ben French of Eldo, Nevada; and Jeneen Wilson and husband Tim of Chatham, Virginia; step-grandchildren: Crystal Anderson and husband H.J. of Summerville, South Carolina; David Kier and wife Jan, Timothy Kier and wife Joell, and Steve Kier and wife Kolesa, all of Newell; and Patty Kosky and husband Rusty of Storm Lake. Also surviving are eleven great-grandchildren, fourteen step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Lloyd Combes and wife Ferne of Storm Lake, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
