Ellsworth E. Jeppeson - Dec. 12, 1920 - Dec. 31, 2007

Ellsworth E. Jeppeson, Sr., age 87, of Newell, Iowa, died Monday, December 31, 2007, in Newell.

Ellsworth Evans Jeppeson, Sr. was born December 12, 1920, to Margaret Evans and Daniel Ellsworth Jeppeson at Sioux Rapids, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at the First United Church of Sioux Rapids. He transferred his church membership to the Congregational Church in Newell in March of 1959. He attended school at Cornell and Linn Grove, Iowa, and graduated in 1938 from High View Consolidated school in rural Linn Grove.

During World War II, Ellsworth was proud to serve his country in the United States Army. He was stationed in Korea in the 7th Division, 32nd Army Infantry until he received his honorable discharge.

On November 26, 1948, Ellsworth was united in marriage to Wanda Williamson of Battle Creek, Iowa. To this union five children were born: Florene, Ellsworth, Sylvia, Lynn and Elwyn.

Ellsworth was a skillful, honest and faithful hard worker. He loved his family. He helped his father farm on the home place south of Linn Grove for many years. After he was married, he worked for Paul Park Construction in Storm Lake, Iowa. There he helped build many homes at Lake Creek and in Storm Lake, the Buena Vista County Hospital, a school in Lake View, the Safeway Store, Duglosh Garage, the Kolb water fountain in Sunrise Park on Storm Lake’s shore, the Truesdale gym, and the tree and flower boxes up and down Lake Avenue in Storm Lake. He helped remodel the J. C. Penney’s and Lee’s stores in Storm Lake and buildings on the Shinrone Ranch south of Odebolt, Iowa.

In 1951, Ellsworth started farming for himself south of Battle Creek (on the Pete Broder’s home place). Two years later, he moved his family to a farm south of Newell. Here he was 50/50 with another farmer. Every year he and his partner raised 3,000-5,000 head of lambs, 800 head of cattle and countless numbers of pigs.

Ellsworth then bought a farm east of Newell. He farmed, milked cows and started trucking. He trucked eggs to Chicago and cattle to Texas, Colorado, and Wyoming. He trucked sheep to south Texas and Missouri. Once he trucked 1,700 head of yearlings from Mexico to Indiana. He also drove a mail truck from Storm Lake to Fort Dodge, Iowa. Six years later, he purchased the present farm from Henry and Jean Kjarsgaard and moved his wife and five children just across the road.

Along with farming, he got back into carpentering. Among some more places he helped build were B.V. Stationery and Printing, the building currently housing the A.E.A., Anderson Brass, and First Federal Bank, all in Storm Lake. He helped with the Albert City nursing home. He poured all the cement in Frank Starr Park for sidewalks, not to mention the endless numbers of remodeled homes and barn shinglings he did.

In later years, he helped at the DeKalb Seed Corn plant in Storm Lake. After retiring, he worked in his woodworking shop making wooden toys and other projects for his family and grandkids as presents for birthdays and Christmases.

Ellsworth was a member of the Eastern Star, Mason Royal Lodge #428, American Legion Post #193 of Newell, Independent Order of Odd Fellows #232 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Ellsworth was a good husband, father, and grandfather. He was an avid fisher and western book reader. He always enjoyed western movies, especially those featuring John Wayne and Clint Eastwood.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda, of Newell; daughter Florene Cork and husband, Richard, of Schaller, Iowa; son Ellsworth, Jr. and wife Teresa of Newell; daughter Sylvia Nelson of Newell; son Elwyn and wife Char of Newell; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Daniel Williamson and wife Mary of Ida Grove, Iowa; three sisters-in-law: Beverly Jeppeson of Spencer, Iowa; Catherine Williamson of Battle Creek; and Gloria Jeppeson of Fort Wayne, Indiana; many nieces, nephews and friends.
