Edwin “Hank” Mitchell - May 9, 1938 - Mar. 25, 2010
Edwin “Hank” Mitchell, age 71, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Thursday, March 25, 2010, at his rural Storm Lake, Iowa, home.
Hank was born on May 9, 1938, in Fresno, California. He faithfully served his country in the United States Marines Corps and completed three tours of duty in Vietnam. Hank received his honorable discharge in 1968. He continued his education at the University of Southern California where he received his teaching degree.
After receiving his teaching credentials, Hank taught industrial arts. Later, he was engaged in the trucking business for his brother while living in California. Hank was united in marriage to Susanna Sins Murphy in Gardena, California. He, then, came to Iowa where he was in the construction business in various locations across the state. Hank’s next business venture was an upholstery business, which he owned and operated in Alta and Storm Lake. Susanna passed away on May 11, 1997.
On December 29, 2000, Hank married Clara Stanley, and they made their home in Storm Lake. He later drove escort for Friesen's Manufacturing. While he was married to Clara, he enjoyed helping her in various ways with her real estate business (flipping houses).
Socializing and being a detailed “story-teller” are fond memories Hank’s family and friends have of him. When he was younger he enjoyed hunting and even hunted wild game. Hank also had an ear for music and he enjoyed listening to country western music. Once Hank heard a song, he had the gift of being able to play the song on his guitar. Other favorite pastimes of Hank’s included fishing, riding his motorcycle with his friends and race cars.
Hank’s memory is celebrated by his family: his two sons-in-law: Vern Willems of Storm Lake, Iowa and Dick Osborn of Spirit Lake, Iowa; his daughter-in-law: Connie Stille of Storm Lake, Iowa; his “kids”: Mark (Sandy) Stanley of Storm Lake; Myron (Terri) Stanley of Rembrandt, Iowa; Miriam Carlson of Remsen, Iowa; Marsena (James) Hubbard of Spencer, Iowa; Lisa (Jeff) Naslund of Galva, Iowa; Linda (Steve) Harvey of Royal, Iowa; Larry (Shyla) Stanley of Sanborn, Iowa; Jerry (MaryAnn) Stanley of Owatonna, Minnesota; his brother-in-law: Carl Nielsen of Storm Lake; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; and the many friends he made throughout his lifetime.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings and his two wives: Susanna and Clara.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Visitation will be Monday, March 29, 2010, from 6-8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Alta, Iowa. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
