Gerald D. Culbertson - Apr. 12, 1917 - Feb. 7, 2007

Gerald D. Culbertson, age 89, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Wednesday, February 7, 2007, at the Hovenden Good Samaritan Center in Laurens, Iowa.

Gerald D. Culbertson was born on April 12, 1917, at McCool Junction, Nebraska, to David and Francis (Donovan) Culbertson. Gerald’s youth was spent at McCool Junction where he began his education at the McCool Public Grade School at the age of 5 in 1922. He graduated from high school there on May 17, 1935. It was during his high school years that he acquired the nickname of “Diney” by which many of his friends knew him. He faithfully served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. Gerald entered the Navy on April 23, 1943, at Omaha, Nebraska, and was honorably discharged on November 24, 1945, at St. Louis, Missouri. During his military career, Gerald achieved the rank of Chief Machinist’s Mate. He also received his pilot’s license on January 24, 1946.

Gerald was united in marriage to Irene E. Whitlock on June 11, 1949, and to this union two sons were born: Jerry and Stephen. Following their marriage and several work related moves, the family once again relocated and settled in Storm Lake in 1959. Gerald, with his sales experience, began his employment with Clough Auto Parts as an outside salesman. For 25 years he sold automotive repair parts to many shops and dealerships throughout northwest Iowa. Gerald retired from sales at Clough Auto Parts on June 16, 1985, but he continued working rebuilding and refinishing automobiles in his shop behind his residence. Gerald was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing trips with family and friends to Minnesota and South Dakota. He enjoyed numerous elk hunting trips to Colorado and Wyoming and moose hunting in Manitoba, Canada. On property owned near Peterson, Iowa, you could find him deer hunting with his sons or at other times you may have found him simply relaxing and watching television. Gerald was a member of the AmVets and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Gerald is survived by his sons: Jerry W. Culbertson and Jennie D. Davis of Storm Lake and Steve R. Culbertson and his wife, Jane, of Storm Lake; his grandchildren: Holly Svendsen-Reap of Telluride, Colorado, and Tyler J. Culbertson of Iowa City, Iowa; his sister, Mary Jane James of Albion, Nebraska; nieces, nephews, other extended family and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving and devoted wife, Irene, a step-son: Jimmie Whitlock, one brother: Hilton “Cub” Culbertson, and a sister: Suzzane Mathews.

Services for Mr. Culbertson will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the start of the services. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery with full military graveside rites presented by AMVETS Post #66.
