Leonard Q. Anderson - Aug. 20, 1921 - Mar. 14, 2007

Leonard Q. Anderson, age 85, of Linn Grove, Iowa, died on Wednesday, March 14, 2007, in the Mercy Medical Center at Sioux City, Iowa.

Leonard Quinten Anderson, the son of Earl Arthur and Elsie Belle (Phillips) Anderson, was born at Linn Grove, Iowa, on August 20, 1921. He lived his youth and received his education at Linn Grove, graduating from the Linn Grove High School in 1938. Leonard served his country during World War II in the Army Air Force. He was inducted into the service on July 11, 1945, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, and honorably discharged on October 26, 1945, from Sheppard Field in Texas. Leonard was a member of the 3706th Army Air Force Base Unit.

He was united in marriage to Beryl Peterson on February 21, 1943, at Linn Grove. The couple was blessed with two children: Cheryl and Barry. Their entire married lifetime has been spent in the Linn Grove area where Leonard was engaged in farming and was also employed as a heavy equipment operator. During his farming years, he was a member of the Hereford Cattle Association.

Leonard was a very active man with many varied interests. He was an airplane pilot, the fire chief of the Linn Grove Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the American Legion for over 60 years, and a man who enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, and trapping. Leonard’s faith was an integral part of his life and he served his Lord through his membership at the Riverside Presbyterian Church in Linn Grove. He was an elder in the church, sang in the choir, and also served as a Sunday School superintendent and teacher. In addition to serving his local church, Leonard shared his faith through the Cursillo ministry. His family was a very important part of his life and Leonard loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed following their various activities.

Those who will always cherish his memory include his wife of 64 years, Beryl, of Linn Grove, Iowa; his children: Cheryl and Paul Anderson of Linn Grove, Iowa, and Barry and Sharon Anderson of Ankeny, Iowa; his grandchildren: Jesseca (Buck) Newton, Jayce (Rob) Hall, Cory, Logan, and Cole Anderson, Laura, Linda, and Aaron Anderson, and Katie (Pete) Kragel; his great grandchildren: Caelin, Gabriella, and Brennan Newton, Cody and Ayden Hall, and Taylor Kragel; one sister, June Booth of Tracy, Minnesota; a brother-in-law, Dean (Sharon) Peterson of Spencer, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Mary Peterson of Spencer, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Elsie; and one sister, Irene Anderson.

Funeral services for Mr. Anderson will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at the Riverside Presbyterian Church in Linn Grove with Reverend Russell Westbrook officiating. Burial will follow at Barnes Township Cemetery at Linn Grove. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
