Arlene Gerdeman - Mar. 5, 1917 - May 9, 2007

Arlene (Matthews) Gerdeman, age 90, of Des Moines, Iowa, and formerly of Sioux Rapids and Linn Grove, Iowa, died Wednesday, May 9, 2007, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Arlene Lyons, the daughter of William and Opal (Dailey) Lyons, was born at Ruthven, Iowa, on March 5, 1917. She lived her youth and received her education at Linn Grove, graduating from the Linn Grove High School.

Arlene was united in marriage to Clifford Matthews on September 16, 1939. This union was blessed with two daughters, Judy and Angela. Clifford and Arlene resided in the Sioux Rapids and Linn Grove communities where Clifford was in the banking profession. Prior to beginning their family, Arlene had been a beautician, but after their children were born, she enjoyed being a devoted homemaker, wife, and mother. Clifford died in 1973.

Arlene later married Earl Gerdeman, and during their married life, they resided in Hartley, Iowa, Lake Havasu City, Arizona, and Des Moines, Iowa. While living in Hartley, Arlene and Earl assisted with the operation of the Baumgarten Funeral Home. The past four years, Arlene has resided with her daughter, Angela, in Des Moines.

Arlene was proud to have been a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star. When she was younger, she enjoyed golfing and playing cards. In recent years, Arlene kept her mind active by doing word search puzzles.

Among those left to cherish her memory are her children: Judy and Bob Petersen of Omaha, Nebraska, and Angela Matthews of Des Moines, Iowa; her grandchildren: Kirsten Morton, Kirk Petersen, Kory Petersen, Derek Reese, and Erin Mueller; 11 great-grandchildren; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her two husbands.

Funeral services for Mrs. Gerdeman will be held Saturday, May 12, 2007, at 1:30 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. Burial will be in Barnes Township Cemetery at Linn Grove. Visitation will be held at the funeral home for one hour prior to service time. The Sliefert Funeral Home of Sioux Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
