Dean Maiden - Apr. 10, 1930 - Mar. 23, 2010

Dean Maiden, age 79, of Marathon, Iowa, died March 23, 2010, at the Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids, Iowa.

Dean Duane Maiden, the son of Otto and Eva (Groff) Maiden, was born in Webb, Iowa, on April 10, 1930. Dean lived his youth and received his education in Marathon, graduating from the Marathon High School.

Following graduation, Dean was employed at Sundholm Manufacturing in Albert City. He then worked for the grain elevators in Webb, Sioux Rapids, and Marathon. Dean’s next employment was with Ranco in Sioux Rapids, and he later worked at Eaton’s Manufacturing in Spencer until his retirement.

Dean’s home was located next to the depot in Marathon and he enjoyed a lifelong passion for trains and the railroad. Because of his keen interest in the railroad, he became well acquainted with all of the train engineers and conductors. Dean was featured several times about his fascination and involvement with trains by the KTIV television station from Sioux City. He was a faithful member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon, and throughout his lifetime, he provided pulpit supply for area churches as a lay minister. Dean’s interest in history was exemplified in his memberships in the Marathon Historical Society and the Buena Vista County Historical Society. In his younger years, he supported the youth of Marathon and Sioux Rapids by serving as a Scout Master.

Dean is fondly remembered by his sisters: Bonnie Storck of Moose Lake, Minnesota; Ann (Dale) Johanson of Ringsted, Iowa; several nieces; nephews; and his many friends.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers: Vaun, Verne, and Calvin; brother-in-law, Robert Storck.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
