Gerald C. Wood - Feb. 21, 1921 - July 6, 2007

Gerald C. Wood, age 86, of Storm Lake, Iowa, passed away on Friday, July 6, 2007, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake following a courageous battle with cancer for nine years.

Gerald Clinton Wood was born on the family farm southwest of Fonda, Iowa, on February 21, 1921, to Verne Cyrus Wood and Edith Laverne (Poland) Wood. At the age of two, the family moved to the present farm southwest of Storm Lake. Gerald attended and graduated from Hayes Consolidated School, a country school two miles east of the farm. After graduating, he attended Buena Vista College for one year. At the onset of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and fought in the Pacific front on a PC boat. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

Gerald moved back after the war to operate the family farm.

During college, he met a young lady named Vera Birch from Cleghorn, Iowa. In 1950, he began to date this lady who was a school teacher from Cherokee. He proposed on her birthday, October 1st, and they were wed on December 10, 1950, at the Presbyterian Church in Cherokee, Iowa. After their honeymoon, they made their home on the family farm. They were faithfully married for over 56 years. Gerald and Vera were proud parents of two children: son, William Verne (1952) and a daughter, Marlys Jane (1953).

Gerald was most proud of living on the same farm since 1923. He was an active member of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church for 75 years. He was a member of the IOOF for 58 years, Camera Club, Isaak Walton League, and Coin Club, serving in different positions.

Gerald will be most remembered for his great sense of humor and his easy going attitude. He was well liked by all and willing to always help those who were in need. He loved his country life and working on the farm.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Vera; son, Bill Wood and his wife Barbara of Galva, Iowa; daughter, Marlys Wood of Early, Iowa; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Thelma Neller of Sacramento, California; and a brother, Virgil of Sioux City, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harold; two sisters-in-law: Judy Wood and Florence Wood; and a brother-in-law, Keith Neller.

Gerald will be greatly missed by his family and friends who knew and loved him.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 am, Tuesday, July 10, 2007, at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake with Pastor David Koehler officiating. Burial will follow at the Storm Lake Cemetery with military honors presented by Storm Lake AMVETS Post #66. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Monday, January 22, 2007, at the funeral home where there will be an Odd Fellows service at 7:00 p.m.
