Bertha L. Tarbill, age 89, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Thursday, September 20, 2007, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center at Storm Lake, Iowa.
Bertha Leona (Nation) Tarbill, the daughter of Noah and Lou (Parker) Nation, was born at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on December 20, 1917. Bertha’s parents died when she was an infant, and she was raised by her grandmother until her grandmother’s death when Bertha was three years old. Bertha’s oldest brother then placed the three youngest Nation children in a orphanage. She resided there for several years and then went to live with her uncle and aunt in Energy, Illinois. Following her education, Bertha worked for three years as a file clerk in a government office. She then moved to California to work as a welder in the Kaiser shipyards during World War II.
Bertha was united in marriage to Laverne Russell Tarbill on December 20, 1943, at Martinez, California. Following Laverne’s honorable discharge from the service in 1946, they moved to the Storm Lake, Iowa, area. Bertha worked as a cook and a waitress for 30 years in Storm Lake, employed at Ella’s Café and at the Cobblestone Inn prior to her retirement.
Bertha will always be fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews: Bertha and Mike Stille of Roland, Iowa; Bertha Bragg of Eureka, Missouri; Margaret Marsh of Charleston, West Virginia; Joyce and Richard Omahundro of Goodlettsville, Tennessee; Clifford and Donna Nation of Columbia City, Indiana; Gayle Kilman of Marissa, Illinois; a longtime friend and caregiver, Linda and Lonnie Wilson of Storm Lake, Iowa; other relatives, neighbors, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Luverne, in 1984; three brothers and two sisters.
Bertha shared her love of crocheting, quilting and cooking with all those close to her and will always be remembered for her peanut brittle which she made at Christmas time.
Bertha’s parting words to her family and friends are, “I’ve only passed this way once, but along the way, I hope I have spread a little joy, love and goodwill to my neighbors and friends and to people I have had the good fortune to meet and know through my lifetime.”
Funeral service for Mrs. Tarbill will be held on Monday, September 24, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Reverend Jerry E. Oakland will officiate at the service. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the start of the funeral service. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
