Virgil Anderson - July 4, 1923 - Oct. 5, 2007

Virgil Winten Anderson, age 84, long time resident of Albert City, Iowa, quietly and peacefully slipped into the presence of his Creator and Redeemer on Friday October 5, 2007.

Virgil Winten Anderson was born on July 4th, 1923, in Laurel, Nebraska, to Lenus and Lillie (Olson) Anderson. He attended school in Laurel, Nebraska, and resided there until joining the service in March of 1943.

During World War II, Virgil proudly served his country in the Army Air Corps as a pilot. He continued his education in the military at Creighton University in Omaha.

At a young age, Virgil trusted Christ as his personal Savior. He was a current member of the Evangelical Free Church in Albert City where he served in many positions throughout the years.

On May 29, 1946, Virgil was united in marriage to Annette Alice Carlson in Albert City at the Evangelical Free Church. To this union five children were born: Douglas, Janeen, Janet, Donna and Dorie.

After farming for nine years, Virgil and his family moved to town and in 1960 and became part owner of the auto garage where he continued to work until his recent illness. He loved his family and cherished the time they spent together. A highlight of Virgil's life was taking his family on camping trips throughout the states with his favorite spot being the Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. A special time for the family was Virgil's annual 4th of July birthday celebration which included pancakes and swimming. Virgil also enjoyed attending ball games and other activities of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Virgil was an active member of the Albert City community. He was a member of the Lion's Club, City Council and American Legion, and he also served as the mayor of Albert City.

In his love for his family, Virgil was deeply concerned about the spiritual welfare of each of its members. He loved his Lord and loved serving Him.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 61 years, Annette, of Albert City; his children: Doug (Joanne) Anderson of Albert City, Janeen (Dennis) Hogrefe of Albert City, Janet Anderson of Ankeny, Iowa; Donna (Dusty) Westbrook of Ankeny, Iowa, and Dorie (Scott) Lovin of Albert City; grandchildren: Deanne Moody, Jill Nelson, Julie Bjork, Clint Hogrefe, Andrea Hogrefe, Lauren Gideon, Evan, Karen and Colin Westbrook, Alicia Heuton, Lucas, Melany and Zachary Lovin; great-grandchildren: Mallory, Madelyn, Makayla and Maxwell Bjork, Esther Hogrefe, Kathelina, Alana and Isaiah Moody, Jenna, Samuel, Ezekiel and Jada Nelson, Wesley and Lillie Gideon: two sisters: Bonnie (Andy) Blomberg of Albert City and LaVonne (Chuck) Binder of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; sister-in-law: Ardith Anderson of Norfolk, Nebraska, and Irma Carlson of Sartell, Minnesota; brothers-in-law: Oscar (Ruth) Olson of Rice Lake, Wisconsin, and Clarence (Ardie) Bloom of Fairmont, Minnesota; as well as a host of extended family and friends.

Preceding Virgil in death are his parents; brother, Clifford; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy (Dale) Dyson; brother-in-law, Ben Kulp; and grandson, Jeremy Anderson.

Funeral service will be 10:30 am, Monday, October 8, 2007, at the Evangelical Free Church in Albert City, Iowa, with Pastor Steve Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City with military honors by the Albert City American Legion Post. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
