Cleo M. Patten - Feb. 1, 1913 - Feb. 10, 2006

Cleo M. Aldrich Patten, age 93, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died Friday, February 10, 2006, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, Iowa.

Cleo Myrtle Aldrich was born February 1, 1913, in Jackson, Minnesota, to Bert O. and Ester (Johnson) Aldrich. She spent her childhood years in her parents’ home at rural Jackson where she received her education in the Jackson school system, graduating in 1932.

On May 23, 1936, Cleo was united in marriage to Roy Franklin Patten in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They were blessed with five children: Maynard, Larry, Donald, Kenneth and Myrtle. They raised their children in the Sioux Rapids area. In the fall of 1967, Roy and Cleo moved from their Sioux Rapids farm to Spirit Lake, returning to Sioux Rapids in 1974.

Cleo was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church in Jackson, Minnesota, and currently a member of the First United Church in Sioux Rapids.

The greatest joy in Cleo’s life was being a mother and grandmother. Over the years, Cleo baked many loaves of homemade bread and batches of buns. Her recipes were passed down among her family, but no one was able to make them as good as hers. She cherished the time she had taking care of her grandchildren.

Survivors include her sons, Maynard Roy Patten and his wife Donna of Webb, Iowa, Larry Dean Patten and his wife Marsha of Greattinger, Iowa, Donald Arthur Patten and his wife Sharon of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Kenneth Franklin Patten and his wife Lois of Sioux Rapids; daughter Myrtle Marie Wittmaack of Sioux Rapids; sixteen grandchildren; thirty-five great-grandchildren; sister Iris Stipek of Jackson, Minnesota; four sisters-in-law: Agnes Aldrich of Jackson, Minnesota, Lucille Aldrich of Angora, Minnesota, Zelma Peta of Estherville, Iowa, Goldie McBreen of Spirit Lake, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; as well as many extended family members and friends.

Cleo was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Ester Aldrich; husband Roy Patten; infant daughter, Mary (twin of Maynard); four brothers: Marvin Aldrich, Art Aldrich, Louie Aldrich, Roy Aldrich; two sisters, Ruth Peterson and Leona Thorsen.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 14, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Church in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, with Pastor Tonna Parsons officiating. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held Monday, February 13, 2006, at the Sliefert Funeral Home from 5:00-8:00 p.m.
