Alva Wilbur - July 25, 1923 - June 8, 2006

Alva Warren “Willie” Wilbur of Albert City, Iowa, died Thursday, June 8, 2006, at Pleasant View Home in Albert City.

Willie was born July 25, 1923, in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, to John and Grace (McKiernan) Wilbur. He graduated from Laurens High School in Laurens, Iowa, before entering the United States Army on October 31, 1945, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He was honorably discharged July 12, 1949, at Fort Sheridan, Illinois.

On February 13, 1944, Willie was united in marriage to Vivian Blomberg at Albert City. The couple was blessed with six children: Michael, Terry, Dennis, Thomas, Peg and Margo. Willie was lovingly devoted to his wife and family. He and Vivian celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary last February.

During his lifetime, Willie worked as a meat cutter at Buse’s Food Store in Albert City before becoming custodian and bus driver at the Albert City Community Schools for 30 years. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Albert City, a 55-year member of the Albert City Lions Club and was a recipient of the Jones’ Award in 1995. He was also a member of the Albert City American Legion.

Willie enjoyed golfing, fishing, woodworking and taking care of fruit trees for people in Albert City. His family always came first in his life and he treasured the time he spent with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His caring presence will be dearly missed by those who loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Vivian of Albert City; children: Michael and Cheryl Wilbur of Primghar, Iowa; Terry and Nancy Wilbur of Littleton, Colorado; Dennis and Janet Wilbur of Omaha, Nebraska; Thomas and Reenae Wilbur of Aloha, Oregon; Peg and Jack Hannam of Omaha, Nebraska; and Margo and John Forbes of Albert City; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters: Audrey and George Dahnke of Onalaska, Wisconsin; Eileen Davis of Pocahontas, Iowa, and Patricia Cejka of Laurens, Iowa; extended family and many friends.

Willie was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Eva.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 12, 2006, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Albert City with Reverend David Bernhardt officiating. Burial and Flag Presentation by the Albert City American Legionwill be held in the Fairfield Township Cemetery at Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held Sunday, June 11, 2006, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City where the family will be present.
