Bernice Watters, age 83, of Sanborn, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon, Iowa.

Bernice Marie Kimmel was born September 6, 1922, to Theodore Roosevelt and Martha (Bruggom) Kimmel in rural Sheldon, Iowa. She spent her early years in the Sanborn area and graduated from Sanborn High School as the Valedictorian of the Class of 1940.

On August 16, 1942, Bernice was united in marriage to Eugene “Gene” F. Watters at her parents’ home. The couple was blessed with two children, Carol and Jerry.

A loving and devoted wife and mother, Bernice’s family was always her first priority. She was a caring person who shared her time and talents where needed without complaint. Bernice was a faithful member of Grace Evangelical Free Church in Sanborn and served her Lord joyfully. Throughout her lifetime, Bernice had been actively involved in many Bible studies and served in a number of church offices. She cared especially about involving young people in church activities and to that end she taught Sunday School and served as leader of the Pioneer Club and also as a counselor at church camp.

Bernice enjoyed bowling, playing bridge, fishing, sewing and handwork of all types. Her gentle caring presence will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of nearly 64 years, Gene Watters of Sanborn; daughter Carol (Gary) Walke of Sumner, Iowa; son Jerry (Holly) Watters of Indianola, Iowa; grandchildren: Erick (Bonnie) Walke of DeForest, Wisconsin; Jason (Michelle) Walke of West Des Moines, Iowa; Joe (Vicki) Watters of Ames, Iowa; and Matthew (Holly) Watters of Ankeny, Iowa; great-grandchildren: Blake, Katie and Bailey Walke; Rachel, Nicole, Ally, Alissa and Amanda Watters; brother Glen Kimmel of California; extended family and many friends.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, Ted and Martha Kimmel, and a granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 17, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at First Reformed Church in Sanborn with Reverend Kenneth J. Carlson officiating. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery in Sanborn. The Sliefert Funeral Home of Storm Lake, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.
