Martin C. Simonson - May 19, 1924 - July 4, 2006

Martin C. Simonson, age 82, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Martin Carl Simonson was born May 19, 1924, in Sioux Rapids to Maynard and Ida (Hjermstad) Simonson. He was confirmed at Faith Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids on May 1, 1938. He received his education in the Sioux Rapids Schools, graduating from Sioux Rapids High School as a member of the Class of 1942.

Martin heeded the call of his country during World War II. He was inducted into the United States Army on September 25, 1946, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, and served until his honorable discharge on December 3, 1947, at Brooke Hospital in Texas. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal from a grateful nation.

On November 19, 1948, Martin and Evelyn Aaron were united in holy matrimony at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They were blessed with four children: Linda, Vicky, Stanley and Steven.

Martin was a farmer his entire life until his retirement. He was an active member of his community, a faithful member of First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids, American Legion Post #394 and DAV in Sioux Rapids as well as the Moose Lodge in Spencer. Martin was an avid horseshoe player, enjoyed fishing with family and friends, going on picnics, swimming, fireworks, golfing, bowling, playing cards, ping pong and pool, his pets, making homemade ice cream and gardening. Martin was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather. He treasured his family and loved to spend time with them. A kind and caring man, his gentle presence will be missed dearly by all those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 57 years, Evelyn of Sioux Rapids; daughter Linda (David) Olson of Spencer, Iowa; daughter Vicky (Del) Whalen and son Stanley (Barbara) Simonson, both of Linn Grove, Iowa; son Steven Simonson of Sutherland, Iowa; grandchildren: Kristina and Tracy Hall of Spencer, Iowa; Jason and Jeri Belcher of Boone, Iowa, and Jake and Jodi Belcher of Newell, Iowa; great-grandchildren: Jessica Lynn and Jarett Lee Hall, Evan and Joy Belcher, and Brooke and Madison Belcher; sister Catholine “Onie” (James) Carlton of St. Paul, Minnesota; brother-in-law Max Barkley; nieces Karen and Rod Wehrli and Mary and Bill Ruby; other nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends.

Martin was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Norma Barkley and her infant son, Larry; and his beloved nephew, David Carlton.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 8, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids with Reverend Tonna Parsons officiating. Burial with Military Honors by the Sioux Rapids American Legion Post #394 will be in Lone Tree Cemetery at Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home of Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 7, 2006, at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids where the family will be present.
