David Joseph Tjaden - Apr. 14, 1951 - Jan. 17, 2005

David Joseph Tjaden, age 53, of Fitzpatrick, Alabama, died at his home Monday, January 17, 2005, of an apparent heart attack.

Dave was born April 14, 1951, near Los Angeles, California, to the late Loren Tjaden and Myrtle (Marnie) Lemker Tjaden. He graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1969. Dave joined the United States Navy in 1969 and served his country for six years, including a tour in the Viet Nam Conflict aboard the USS Tattnall. He achieved the rank of Petty Officer First Class as a weapons systems specialist.

He was united in marriage to Beverly Still Kock on September 9, 1985. Dave embraced her four children as his own. He was proud of his kids and loved them very much while acknowledging their need to share their love with their biological dads, too.

After his discharge from the Navy, Dave used his electronics training at HyGrade Food Products and IBP in Storm Lake Iowa as a maintenance technician. In 1987 he moved to Montgomery, Alabama, to join Big Lots in the distribution center there.

Dave was a member of The Fraternal Order of Eagles and an avid outdoor sportsman. Dave's passion was hunting, fishing, and retelling those experiences with friends. Dave enjoyed cooking and hosting parties with an outdoor theme. Deep fried turkey was his specialty, and the venison, Mallard, pheasant, bass or Walleye he served was always freshly caught.

Dave is survived by his mother, Marnie Tjaden of Methodist Manor in Storm Lake, two sons: Marc (Belinda) Kock of Hoover, AL, and Kory (Peggy) Kock of Louisville, KY; two daughters: Kimberley Shunnarah of Louisvlle, KY, and Kelly Smith of Jeffersonville, IN; grandchildren: Miranda, Kelsie, Kaitlyn, Kara, Shelby, Colton and Tessa; and his parents-in-law, Glen and Phyllis Still of Galva, IA.

He is further survived by two brothers, Steve (Roxanne) Tjaden of Lakeside, IA, and Dan (Julie) Tjaden of Storm Lake; one sister: Lori (Mark) Lewis of Avoca, IA; a niece, Elizabeth Tjaden, and nephew, Ben Tjaden, both of Lakeside, IA; special friends Terry and Barbara Knaus and Alan Kleckler all of Union Springs Alabama; as well as other family and friends.

In addition to his father, Dave was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife Beverly.

Funeral Service will be Friday, January 21, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Galva, Iowa, with Pastor Tom Egger officiating. Burial will be in Galva East Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 20, 2005, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present.

Memorials in Dave’s honor may be sent to the Lake Preservation Association, PO Box 1263, Storm Lake, Iowa 50588.
