Evelyn North-Evans
May 26, 1914 - March 03, 2010

Storm Lake, Iowa
Evelyn Lena North was born May 26, 1914, in LeMars, Iowa, to John and Mary (Spinler) Sins. She was baptized into the Catholic faith in LeMars. Evelyn attended grade school in Alta, Iowa, and earned a certificate for penmanship.

On May 13, 1934, Evelyn was united in marriage to Samuel Thurman North at the Baptist Chapel in Storm Lake, Iowa. Together they were blessed with two boys, Robert Dean North and Harold Jellett North. Evelyn loved life and she worked hard while raising two boys.

She helped manage the Lakeside Roller Dome and waited tables at the Cobblestone Inn at Lakeside. She and her husband, Thurman, roller skated in many competitions winning many awards. She and Thurman and her two boys, plus a good friend, roller skated at lots of small town celebrations and other roller rinks during the 1940’s and early 1950’s. She also loved to dance, but Thurman did not.

When they closed the roller rink, she continued to wait tables at the Cobblestone until it closed.

After Thurman died, she met a wonderful man, Dar Evans who she loved very much. They were married on July 30, 1994, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Together they went to dances and traveled, seeing a lot of the country.

But she lost this wonderful man too soon. She had two stepdaughters with Dar who treated her like their real mom even right up to the end.

Evelyn met another man who became a good friend. They would go to Florida in the winter together for ten years. She loved to visit relatives and friends while traveling.

She loved to go to the senior center and visit friends. She could make a grumpy person smile just by coming into the room. She even would make jokes when she knew she had very little life left. She didn’t want to leave her family even at the end.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Robert North Sr. of Newell, Iowa; Harold (Bettie) North of Storm Lake, Iowa; her step-daughters, Carmen (Gordon) Locke of Nashua, New Hampshire; Loni (Steve) York of Arundel, Maine; grandchildren: Michael (Teresa) North of San Angelo, Texas; Cheryl (Dennis) Christiansen of Shenandoah, Iowa; Tamela (Kris) Parker of Persia, Iowa; Robert (Tammy) North Jr. of Pine, Arizona; Connie (Dave) Luhmann of Sergeant Bluffs, Iowa; Kipp (Julie) North of Varina, Iowa; 15 great grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; many nieces; nephews; extended family and friends.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husbands, Thurman North and Dar Evans; her parents, John and Mary Sins; grandson, Steven North; 3 brothers; 4 sisters; and her daughter-in-law, Kay North.
