Ruth E. Arends - Sept. 21, 1922 - Mar. 17, 2005
Ruth E. Arends, age 82, of Newell, Iowa, died at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, on Thursday, March 17, 2005.
Ruth Evelyn Fitchett was born September 21, 1922, in rural Newell to Orson and Mary (Johnson) Fitchett. She lived with her family on their farm outside Newell where she attended Newell consolidated schools and graduated in 1941. Ruth was baptized and confirmed in 1941 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell. She remained a faithful and active member, serving as a Sunday school teacher, on Ladies Aid, the Altar Guild and with the Quilting Group over the years.
On March 3, 1942, Ruth was united in marriage to Vernon John Arends at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell. Their union was blessed with four children: Karen Kay, Keith Vernon, Reva Rae and Dale Robert.
Ruth was a proud community member who attended the Newell-Coon Neighbors and the Newell Community Club. In addition, she was a long time 4-H leader and served on the Farm Bureau Women’s Committee.
Over the years, Ruth enjoyed traveling to Mission, Texas, where she and Vernon wintered for 20 years. She also enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, handwork and quilting. Her family was very special to her and she loved to have them visit and to go to their homes. The many family visits and chats were priceless to her. She enjoyed the many baseball and basketball games which she was able to attend to watch the Newell kids and her grandchildren play.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Karen Nehring of Newell, Reva Arends of Newell and Dale Arends and his wife Lori of Newell; grandchildren: Wade and Cheri Nehring of Newell, Darcie and Jason Hendricksen of Sac City, Kari Thompson of Newell, Shelley and Bill Etyenhauser of Overland Park, Kansas, Karen Arends of Summerville, South Carolina, Janet and Dan Morano of Rockwall, Texas, Mark and Heather Arends of Omaha, Nebraska, Danielle Arends of Sioux City, Iowa and Rob Arends of Savage, Minnesota; great grandchildren: Justin Nehring, J.R. and Olivia Thompson, Claire and Brian Etzenhauser, Katelyn, Christopher and Jacob Morano, Amanda Dietsch; brother LeRoy Fitchett and his wife Elnora of Newell; sisters Fern Crowley of Storm Lake, Joyce Robbins and her husband Don of Alta and Pearl Marlatt of Newell; as well as many other family members and a host of friends.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Orson and Mary Fitchett; husband Vernon; son Keith; son-in-law Garland Nehring; sisters Doris Waterman and Jean Banks; and brother Ivan Fitchett.
Funeral Services will be Friday, March 25, 2005, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell with Reverend Michael Harmon officiating. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be on two days: Tuesday, March 22nd, and Wednesday, March 23rd, from 5:00-8:00 pm each day at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell where family will be present.
