Mildred M. Nielsen - July 26, 1909 - Mar. 31, 2005

Mildred M. Nielsen, age 95, of Newell, Iowa, died Thursday, March 31, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Center in Newell, Iowa.

Mildred was born July 26, 1909, in Blair County, Altoona, Pennsylvania, to George Bulick and Carrie Deter Bulick. She and a younger sister were orphaned by the time she had reached the age of 9 years. Little is known of her early childhood.

Mildred came to Storm Lake in Buena Vista County in 1925 and joined the Storm Lake Baptist Church in 1927. The following year in May of 1928, Mildred graduated from Storm Lake High School.

On May 3, 1930, she was united in marriage to Victor Nielsen at the Danish Lutheran Church parsonage at Hampton, Iowa.

They lived in the Newell area, becoming residents there for the remainder of their lives.

There were three sons born to this union: Jacob Glenn Nielsen, Kenneth LeRoy Nielsen and Neal Charles Nielsen.

Mildred was a good cook and liked to bake. There were always cookies in the cookie jar for the grandkids and for anyone that dropped by for coffee. If the cookie jar was empty and they just couldn’t wait, Grandma and the kids baked some together. Ingredients were always on hand. Otherwise Grandpa was sent to the store.

Over the years, Mildred collected recipes and tried a lot of new ones on her family. If they didn’t like it, she would put a big “NO” or “UGH” beside the recipe. She loved to crochet and I’d bet that her family members have more afghans in their closets than the average person. She was always looking for a new pattern to try. Flowers and plants were another enjoyment of Mildred’s, she had a rose bush that she especially enjoyed.

Visiting with her family and friends was an important part of Mildred’s day. Consequently, she was a big fan of the CB Radio, whose handle was “Minnie’s Fish House.”

Mildred was preceded in death by her father and mother, sister, husband Victor, son Neal and daughter-in-law Kay (Bell) Nielsen.

Left to cherish her memory are sons: Jacob G. Nielsen of Newell, Iowa, and Kenneth L. Nielsen and his wife Joyce (McCullough) Nielsen of Blockton, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Mickey (Neagle) Morrow of Newell, Iowa; twelve grandchildren: Tom Nielsen of Newell, Iowa, Joyce (Lussman) Nielsen of Storm Lake, Iowa, Mike Nielsen and wife Dellene (Chiles) Nielsen of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Mariane Nielsen of Sutherland, Iowa, Dan Nielsen and wife Lonna (Halverson) Nielsen of Winterset, Iowa, Sharon Nielsen of Storm Lake, Iowa, Mark Nielsen and wife Melissa “Meg” (Meusburger) Nielsen of Truesdale, Iowa, Lori (Nielsen) Hunt and husband Randy Hunt of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Kevin Nielsen and wife Kris (Ridiout) Nielsen of Iowa Falls, Iowa, Kelly (Nielsen) Scott and husband Robert Scott of Davenport, Linda (Nielsen) Buckendahl of Rembrandt, Iowa, Larry Nielsen and wife Candi (Weaver) Nielsen of Newell, Iowa, Lisa (Nielsen) Kraft and husband Tony Kraft of Fonda, Iowa; 27 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews as well as other family members and friends.

Funeral Services will be Sunday, April 3, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell with Reverend Paul Johnston officiating. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements. There will be no visitation.
