Warren M. Frerichs - Apr. 21, 1921 - May 24, 2005
Warren M. Frerichs, age 84, passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at his home in Newell, Iowa.
Warren was born on April 21, 1921, the son of August and Margaret (Mann) Frerichs, in Wall Lake, Iowa. He graduated from Wall Lake High School in 1938 and served in the U. S. Coast Guard from June of 1941 through June of 1946. He earned the rank of Yeoman 2nd Class.
On August 13, 1943, Warren was united in marriage to Elva Virginia Petersen in Seattle, Washington. Two children were born to this union.
Beginning his career while attending Wall Lake High School, Warren pursued the printing profession working in Walnut, IA. He moved to Newell with his family in 1948 where he worked on The Newell Mirror staff, which later became the Buena Vista County Journal. He retired from the Journal in 1984.
He was a member of the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell and an active member of the Newell American Legion. Warren had the honor of being the first WWII veteran to serve as the post commander, and he was in that role while the Allee Building was built and dedicated. He especially enjoyed traveling to Washington State to spend time with his daughter and son-in-law. His interest in all things nautical remained with him throughout his life.
He will be missed by his daughter, Mary Marler and her husband Dan of Hansville, Washington; his sister Norma Cunningham and her husband Elmer of Morro Bay, CA; sisters-in-law: Betty Christensen of Newell and Verna Witter and husband Joe of Plainfield, IL; and his brother-in-law Virgil Petersen and his wife Donna of Loveland, CO. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
His parents; wife Elva on July 29, 2004; and an infant daughter, Nancy Ann, preceded Warren in death.
Funeral services for Warren Frerichs will be held on Friday, May 27th, 11:00 a.m., at the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa, with Reverend Paul Johnston officiating. Burial will be at the Newell Cemetery under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.
Visitation will be on Thursday, May 26th, 4:00-8:00 p.m., with family present from 6:00-8:00 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.
